Infi blade finishes

I've got a couple Busse knives. I assume they are Satin finishes, but I can't be sure. I don't see any info on the Busse site to describe the various finishes (not colors on coated blades). Is there something out there that compares or describes the various finishes. My Game Warden appears to be a "mat" or a media blasted finish (double cut maybe) verses a satin. Any info will be appreciated. Thank you...

Fastest & Easiest Sunday Morning method < a lot of Hogs will be "sleepin in"> ;) would be a Google image search for the following:

"Busse Double Cut finish"....that's the matte or bead blasted you refer to

"Busse Competition finish"....a very raw <but spectacular> finish with INFI dimples & other tooling marks left behind, designed as a basic finish for testing and cutting competitions...

"Busse Satin finish" and "Busse Custom Shop" ... a very refined finish with very uniform, regular extra fine scratch marks, like presentation / museum quality....

In addition, INFI can be almost mirror polished, that would be an individual's own work, something they commissioned , or perhaps a Custom shop request

Peteys got it covered. Also google the B.I.G. Finish like ChainWhip mentioned.

But still, would like to see pics of yours if you can. :)

There were actually two "competition" finishes. With the original Competition Grade finish, as described by Jerry here, they'd "take a blade straight from the furnace and do a light pass on a wheel and then it's all about the edge." These blades still had a layer of decarb and quickly acquired a coating of surface rust, as seen here.

This was supplanted by a new competition finish that wasn't prone to rusting, but was still pretty rough and covered with INFI dimples. For a while you could call up the shop get a Team Gemini Light Brigade with the competition finish, which was a pretty good approximation of Daryl Dixon's knife. They stopped offering that too.

It now seems to have been superseded by the "BIG Satin" finish (Busse Industrial Grade Satin Finish), as seen in the Thanksgiving Ganzaaaaa 2014.

^^^Saddest reality in Busseland these days, first Comp Finish was axed… then the BIG Finish fell off the radar without a peep.^^^

I find it hard to get excited about coated blades and expensive satin finishes these days, maybe one day things will change around these parts… :thumb up:

BTW, that BIG Finish ASH-1 looks absolutely killer with that finish/handle combo… one of the few pumpkin blades that I've found myself salivating over.

Anybody know why the satin finish costs so much more? To my eye it looks similar to the finish that gets put on a Buck or Spyderco blade.

Because it's Infi and to get to that finish takes many times more effort than polishing the next best steel on the market.

A couple weeks ago I sat down with my SOB, my Buck Woodsman and some sandpaper to make them pretty again. INFI took more effort but definitely not "many times" more. All in all, I still think that aside from the comp finish, the double cut bead blasted finish would be the quickest/cheapest finish to put on a knife. Sure would like to see it regularly available.

Here is how Busse describes the difference in the B.I.G. Industrial Finish and Satin-If I can't get a knife in Satin, the Big Industrial Finish looks very nice
The “BIG Satin” finish (Busse Industrial Grade Satin Finish) is NOT our hand applied satin finish as seen on our Limited Editions and Custom blades. Surface grind marks WILL be prevalent and rounds will not be polished.”

I was just joking.
At first I had written INFInite times more effort but then thought maybe it could come across as sarcastic. Didn't intend that since I like Busse and everything they do so I changed that and the joke seems to have been lost. :-(

Simply additional shop labor and what someone might be willing to pay are the only factors which can increase the price for full satin finish. Do one by yourself and you will appreciate far more the value you are receiving for having the shop do it for you and saving you the trouble.
