Any of you Busse veterans know anything about the development of INFI...im not talking about the "proprietary" details... Im just curious how Jerry went about developing a whole new steel..??
I assume he was using standard cutlery tool steels and one day decided he would come up with his own steel and somehow came up with a plan to somehow develop a steel with all these qualities...im just hoping someone knows the details behind the whole quest for infi timeline..
did he do mass trial and error testing?? did he develop it himself?? as a fan of Busse and INFI im just curious about the history behind the legendary steel..?

As far as I know, Jerry developed INFI over a period of a decade and a half or more. I believe at the time he didn't have the facility he has now. Everything was very involved, laborious and hands on. As far as to why he developed it-- I remember reading an old thread here where Jerry talked about how the steels of the day (ATS-34, A2, 5160 and others) were lacking the qualities he wanted to see for his customers --law enforcement and military primarily along with some collectors--and as a knifemaker.

I'm not a veteran of Busse history but that's what I know. Some of the other Hogs can probably fill in the blanks.

Very cool! Thanks! ...I wish the story was easier to find. It's certainly interesting

I was late on the scene, 2006, but AFAIK the development of INFI was not public.

I'm talking about how he went about it.. did he work with a Steel smelter company and try a bunch of different formulas along with different HT processes? How long did it take to nail it down? How much testing did he do? It's just interesting to me...I'm suspecting it was a long difficult undertaking as not many companies have attempted a whole new steel..

Well in the "Proof of Busse/Kin Superiority" thread on page 4 there is some interesting information about its announcement and a little about development..its a good read :) along with a funny 90s pic of their knife booth an Jerry with beer in hand.. that's about the most I've found on it :(

"So there I was.....mindin' my own business.......drinking some Black Label...when outa now here's, comes this Angel. All shiny, holding aloft a glowing sword.

We struck up a conversation. I asked this here Angel if he ever got bored o doin' nuttin but the Lords work. After a while I asks him iffin he wants a pull O my bottle. He says yes, and one drink leads to another. Before I know it, he's offerin me this big ol shiny sword for a fresh bottle of that Black Lable. I tell him that's not a fair deal (after all, I got some plenty of it. Then he says to me "well, I recon I could tell you how to make more of this here steel, so you can have more swords."

The rest is history.....
