So for Scouts tonight, I decided to take my strop bat and show them how to strop some knives. I took my convexed GW, Convexed SS, and my newly Acquired CG Ash 1 to Scouts. One of the Scout's fathers let us come over to his house and help butcher an elk. He had the two hind quarters out ready to slice up.

How sweet is that. First time I used my Ash1 for anything and it was to slice meat off an elk for two hours. The GW worked great. The SS did not do too bad for tracing the lines of the muscles and slicing off the bits and pieces that were no good.

That Fat Ash did much much better than I would have ever predicted. It was able to trim and slice that meat extremely well for such a thick blade.

It was a great chance to teach the Scouts a bit about how to process game, and to appreciate where their supermarket meat comes from. We also cut elk steaks off and threw them on the BBQ right there.

Only two bad things. No one had a camera handy, so no pics. (and I even had my camera sitting there, but though there would be nothing fun to snap pictures of at scouts tonight).

The other bad thing one of the other guys using Ash1 managed to roll the edge a tiny bit about 1.5" from the tip. It was not from contact with the bone, but from a hard cut, through the meat, through the paper it was on, and oops, thunk against the concrete table beneath it. Nothing really easy to see, and already taken out once I got home.

Great to hear that the Ash1 works well in a real application even with the thick blade. Shame about not getting pictures but at least your descriptions are good.

What?? no pictures... Damn:grumpy:
Owning those knives and sharpening them back up is half the fun anyway.

I did not bring the camera, no one else had one handy, and I did not feel like making the guy who's house it was go tromping into the house all bloody up to the elbows just to search around for a buried camera.
