I know this thread is worthless because it has no pics but perhaps it might be interesting nevertheless. One of my clients, a law firm, has a holiday party at an upper-end steakhouse in NYC. So this year I brought my Fire Warden dressed in gorgeous Chuddy Bear pants. I waited till everyone had a drink or two and then pulled it out of my coat and set it on the table. No one was scared or freaked out but a couple people kept staring at it and there was a pregnant pause until I said, "You can't cut up a fifty dollar steak with just anything now can you?" The ice was broken and people were intrigued. Now I have rebeveled the edge on this warden to about 10 degrees per side and polished it to slice hair, its dangerously sharp and I warned people in a serious way before I passed it around. The woman next to me in particular really appreciated it and turned it around in her hands a few times, I think she may have caught the INFI bug. I mentioned that in Europe and in France in particular its quite common for people to bring their own knives to a restaurant and when the waiter came by to pass out the "steak knives" he saw mine and smiled and said I don't think you'll need this. Moral of the story: everyone appreciates fine knives, some people just don't know that they do, yet.

If i put one of my own knives on the table on a restaurant here i'd most likely be asked to leave. Or get arrested.

Never been to France but in the european countries i've been to (8-10 or so) i've never heard of or seen anyone bring their own knife to the table. Sounds like a myth. Would be fun if it's true though. Next time i speak to someone from France i'll ask :)

Yeah I've been to lots of restaurants in Europe and have never seen anyone with their own knife but it seems plausible and challenges peoples notions about acceptable behavior :D:D

:D That it does. A factoid that is unlikely to be disproven there and then, and that will serve as a mind-opener.

Don't do it here though, unless you want to lose your knife and your place at the table.

Why on earth would a restaurant care? I would be baffled if anyone cared about a tiny knife being used. It would be several inches shorter than the steak knives at any restaurant.

That would be silly in the extreme.

I know we get looks when we dine at Fogo, but none of us have been thrown out that I can recall. Some of the guys were using their AK's at dinner.

Here, I'd respect someone asking me to leave their establishment, but as far as losing my knife... :D

It really depends on where in Europe you go! I am from Sweden and been to more places than I can even remember. Saying that, no one is actually wrong or right here in my opinion! It really depends on where you are going!

In the big cities, like Paris and Milano etc, they usually look at you like you are crazy if you bring out your own knife during your dinner. Saying that, on the county side in most of the countries - they don't really care and they will bring their own knives. I have seen this in countries like France, Italy and Greece and so on. Not a big deal there since the knife is seen as a tool.

Why would the waiter or waitress even notice unless you made a big deal about bringing your own knife. They never seem to pay attention when i want the bill to get the hell out of there.
