Infi is a fantstic steel. Have any of you Oinkers been impressed by another steel(s} like a CPM or a tool steel? Are there any blades that you've seen put to the test and said,"WOW." Close but not INFI!

Fehrman Blades. I have a Final Judgment and it is a great blade!

Also some custom work. David Wesner makes A2 and 5160 do some amazing things.

Cpm3v has not impressed me in the ast and I have had a few customs made of it and HT'd by paul bos.

A2 has impressed me in the Reeves knives I have had.

But it all depends what you are looking for. In general A2 is one of my favorite hard use steels. BG42 and ATS34 continue to be my favorite SS along with VG10

I had a CRK Sable IV made of A2 that I have subsequently sold. I had heard all sorts of praise about its strength. When researching the knife lots of folks spoke of opening tin cans with it. I tried and chipped the edge in a couple of spots. These were definitely chips, not rolls in the steel. I was not impressed with the steel. The knife was very well made, but the steel didn't take nearly the pounding that INFI or SR-101 does for me.

SR-101 is very strong steel. It can take a hell of a beating and keep asking for more.
My only complaint is when I baton with it my hand feels like it is about to fall off because this steel does not damper vibrations well at all because of its hardness.
I then tried the EURO4 made of infi and it basically had almost no vibrations and my hand felt fine..

M4 is supposed to be astonishing, but I don't have any personal experience with it. Tom Krein is a big fan. I may have to get one of his knives in it for purely research purposes. The numbers look fantastic:

With the steels hardened to optimum for each alloy, wear resistance is about 7 times greater than D2 and toughness is between A2 and D2.

This link is for 3V, but it has M4 in the comparison table: http://www.crucibleservice.com/datash/ds3Vv5b.pdf

The 5160 Justin uses in Ranger knives handles some pretty tough stuff admirably. His RD series reminds me a little of the old Busse SH knives.

infi first, everything else is second.

seriously, though, i like all kinds of steels.

i have:

emersons in 154cm
crk's in s30v
lightfoot in bg42
doziers in d2
several knives in ats34.

each brings something to the table. some take a wicked edge, some are very tough.

in the end, ive found infi to be the best combination of steel characteristics.

I very much like A2. In fact it took a while for me to leave my A2 knives home an take INFI on my trips. But I have changes over now. I also like BG42.

All three of these (INFI, A2 and BG42) seem to sharpen up kind of toothy and I find that they really cut well.
