The Preamble: I am BAD at sharpening. Until I got my WSKST, i was utterly incapable of making a knife even paper slicing sharp. When i tried, i generally did massive damage.

The WSKST Precursors: With my WSKST, I was able to master getting my knives up to a much better level of sharpness. I could get to paper slicing sharp on most knives, but even with massive effort, I was only able to get a shaving edge by adding a secondary bevel that i didn't like at all. I was (and am) completely incapable of getting a true zero convex edge that was also "hair popping sharp"

Enter The TGLB: I have sharpened this blade 2 times. The first time, i reprofiled it, and took it to a very nice receipt slicing, moderately hair shaving edge. It took me a VERY short amount of time, and i didn't go for the insanely sharp edge that i really wanted, because i didn't want to mess up an edge which was already better than anything I was normally able to get. I took it out, used the crap out of it and it lost that hair shavy quality, although after a weekend of batonning and chopping, it was still paper slicing sharp.

My Masterpiece: Tonight, i decided to resharpen my knife to see if i could get back to shaving sharp. I decided to pull out all the stops, so i used my 1500 grit belt (in less than 1 minute it was shaving again) , then stepped up to a 3000 grit belt and polished it to mirror quality. After the 3000 grit belt, it was seriously beautiful. The edge was also sharper than ANYTHING i've ever sharpened before. It is now HAIR POPPING sharp, and i actually managed to get it to cut a piece of tissue paper that i got in a present for my birthday. I don't know any other way to test it, and since i don't seem to be able to get God to stop by to see if it's up to Hattori Hanzo standards i'm just gonna declare it "sharp enough"

My Question: Are you folks under the impression that there's something about INFI that makes it easier to sharpen and more prone to taking a seriously sharp edge?

Simply.....Yes!

INFI is easy to sharpen:thumbup:

But, its only one of the reasons we love it so:cool:

Infi is very easy to sharpen. after a weekend beating I usually just run it on the strop and it's good to go again. congrats on the sharpening

I'm going to HAVE TO try this "strop" that everyone speaks of. It is like magic to me. I have tried a belt loaded with that white stuff, or that yellow stuff and it just makes moderately sharp knives into dull knives

use a piece of good leather, rub some mother maguires metal polish on it and gently strop. Pulling away from the edge not toward. Use the rough side not the smooth.

The next question/step..... Do you want all your knives "hair popping" sharp? Or varying sizes get varying degrees of sharpness?

Be careful with your technique on the strop. It is VERY easy to dull the edge of your technique is wrong. I know from experience :o

Look up some "how to"s for sharpening a straight razor on a razor strop. Learn that technique and your infi will turn into a laser. :)

I want every knife to be as absolutely sharp as possible when i am done sharpening.

My large choppers have a bit steeper edge geometry to make them more durable, but i want them all to be as sharp as possible with the geometry they have

today, i chopped up an old leather messenger bag, and a pizza box. I folded the lid of the pizza box up to 3x thick, then glued the leather rough side up in 12" strips to each side of the cardboard with superglue. I loaded one side with black and one side with white compound

I then proceeded to use my makeshift strop on my EDC and my skinner. They were already sharp, but now they are INCREDIBLE.

I used it on the TGLB, but other than getting the edge a little shinier, i don't think it got sharper. I honestly don't know how i would test that... it was already sharper than i could test

I am now utterly convinced that strops are magic, and i just ordered a 4 sided strop bat from JRE

Why didn't any of you people tell me about this!

INFI I find easy to sharpen and reshape after you pop a nail or something else hard. I don't care if your talking carbide edges, stones, belt sanders, or strops. INFI is the best working man/woman(ask Amy-O, azshaman, lisantica and others) steel I have found. I have to say that SR-101 I think is better in the thinner stocks. Cause it will hold an edge that is wicked and I believe that is one reason even for a lot of the HOGS that the RMD is a sought after blade. INFI though is my favorite steel for general hard use blades.

strops = key to amazing edge, all though with doing it right i can strop on my 1200 grit diamond leaving no need for a real strop and it will shave all though it leaves alot of bite to the edge. still nothing like a good strop, i use green compound for now, will be moving to diamond spray soon ish :D

I think it is fairly easy to sharpen... definitely easy to keep sharp once sharp via stropping. I do think it is easy to dull with a strop as well...

INFI and 52100 are very easy for me to sharpen. I really like using a ceramic stone or rod, it gets them very sharp with VERY little effort. I'm getting lazy in my old age...

Sharpening skills give that extra dimension to enjoying knives

A P.O.S. rusty old machete can become a thing of "respect" when the edge on it is like a razor ... you end up getting much more value from this hobby when you do something simple like that ...

I "bless" Horndog on the Yard for taking his time to show me the ropes ... this weekend I have two sets of Chef's knives to sharpen ... did one for a mate who is a Chef at a great local pub ... word spreads and I got asked to do a few more guys knives ... now I get the chance to eat out a lot cheaper
