My collection of SHSH's with Grooved Micarta. :D

Hmmmm........
I think the bottom one is probably the oldest!
I think that the 3 flat sections and the pointy area (not rounded off) on the micarta (across from the talon hole) indicate that it's a little older.

WM,

Do you happen to know when they made the following or switched to it.

1) Smooth
2) Partially Serrated (vertical)
3) Full Serrated (vertical)
4) Diagonal Serrated
5) Diamond Pattern

Nope. I'm terrible at dates.
Keep in mind that between 2 and 3, there might be some with fully serrated micarta with "pointy micarta" across from the talon hole.... A hybrid, if you will. (like the middle one in this picture, from Badmojo, notice how the bottom has rounded off micarta across from the talon hole)

At least, that's how it is with my BMs....
Since I see this overlap in Busse evolution, that is what I have concluded.
Let's see if any of the UBER HOGs can confirm this.

Okay, after doing a little homework, I don't think the pointy micarta thing can be used as an accurate point of dating a piece. It seems to come and go, I noticed a "pointy micarta" SHSH with rivet, SO<....
There goes that theory. :(

lets not forget about refurbs.

For Actual dates, it would have to be papathud, if he can remember that. Maybe Porkducci, the SH man.

Summer of 1996 was still smooth green canvas micarta with smooth bolts if that helps any. Slotted screws comes after, then hollow on the steel heart.

And I think the diagonals were late in the game, maybe a precursor to the rope cuts???

Summer/Fall 1999 to Spring/Summer/Fall 2000 brought all these listed changes.

Also brought the change from screw type fasteners to hole type.

First the Badgers then a combination of Steel Hearts/Battle Mistress's.

I think the Mean Street were the last to change, Not sure, my notes are all in storage for now.

The first Badger Made with the Hole type fasteners (Protoype with special Micarta as well) sold at the fall 1999 (October I think) Y-2K preparedness show in Las Vegas Nevada.

The First batch of knives I received for the Las Vegas Custom knife show in Febuary 2000 was a mix of the Handle grinds listed.

Over this year long period of time there was also about a .5 inch difference in overall length in the Steel Hearts made.

Andre,

Thanks for the info.
Now I just need to find one with the diamond quilted micarta.

Mulder,

That one will prolly come with a Crinkle finish as well.

But I sorta remember a couple Factory Satin as well.

Here is a couple of pictures of different SHSHs. I tried to arrange them from earliest to newest from top to bottom (but no guarantees!) The top one has no lines in it at all, like the BBSHSHs. You can also see the blade shape and length differences in them like Andre pointed out.

In trying to educate myself further, would you guys comment on the value (approximate selling price) for that custom shop in the photo?

It was worth every penny! I'm not going to say what I paid, but older larger customs are generally over $650 - $700. If you want one made for you, it is best to call Busse Combat direct and describe what you want, like a folder or something and they will quote you a price.

Without spoiling Tim's fun, I can tell you that I bid $600 on that blade and lost to him. I consoled myself with the sterile HOFSH LE that I traded to Briggz last month....

thanks for the info. The reason that I ask is to understand the various costs of these blades to give (myself) additional justification in my mind for purchasing the nuclear MOASH in the last extravaganza.

Were there ever any Smooth Bolt Smooth Handle SHSH II's?

piglet in training,
dave
