Infi vs. SR101?

Not a metallurgical expert by any means, I know Infi has much going for it as far as toughness and edge holding. What about SR? Just ordered one of the new Combat Grade ASHs and its got me wondering how much difference there is between the two from a use standpoint. I'm not a beat on my gear kind of guy but its nice to know it can take whatever may come up.

For most intents and purposes you will not notice a difference as both steels are super tough. Corrosion is the one area where you will notice a difference.

Corrosion resistance = INFI
Edge Retention = SR101

Other than that you will be hard pressed to see a difference in use.

Yep. And I'd add that the smaller the knife, the higher up the 90%+ performance ladder SR101 goes.

For smaller blades, I've been told that the above is correct . for anything under 7" I believe. I like the ease of sharpening sr101. Very "sticky" edges in my experience.

Yes, that's about right. At 7.5", my differentially-tempered Camp Tramp is right at the upper limit at which SR101 can give INFI a real run for it's money. But bigger than that and trying to beat INFI is like trying to outrun Secretariat!

That is an interesting observation. Kinda makes sense. However, if Jerry ever takes INFI back up to 60-62, there is no catching up to it.

Seconds...... Why'd he bring it down anyways? We're there chipping issues, or just overall cost? I imagine the toughness benefit outweighed the slight reduction In edge retention?

Because, one day he received an SHBM for warranty replacement. He could not tell it was an SHBM. He called the guy and asked him what he did with the knife because he had never seen a knife mangled like that before and he told the guy the knife would be replaced anyway. The guy told him that he had invited several friends over to help break up his concrete driveway. They had been drinking, a lot, and he started bragging about how the Busse SHBM was indestructible. His buddies dared him, and you know what happens when you get dared and are drunk. Well, he and his buddies proceeded to break up the driveway with the sledge hammer and the SHBM. The next morning I am sure the guy could not believe how stupid he had been. But it is stories like this that makes me think Jerry dropped the Rc to double the toughness. Only a guess, but it makes sense.

I guessed something along those lines. How's your driveway look NOW?

Ive heard that it was dropped after the Ergo handled blades went the way of the dodo. I'm curious though, was it ALL of the ergos, mojo, steelHeart, Badger, natural Outlaw, included, or just the battle mistresses that were hardened to 60-62 rc?

SR101 and most well heat treat 52100 will get sharper and hold an edge much longer.

INFI win at toughness and lateral strength since the hardness is homogeneous.

At the time I don't remember anything about different Rc's so I would think they were all HT'd to the same Rc. And yes the ergos were the last ones advertised at 60-62 if I remember correctly.
