Quick into-
Day Job - Engineer at a manufacturing plant.
In the USMC Reserves (SMCR)
Into knives, but don't own a ton.
Got the Ka-bar, but more for tradition then actual field work. It goes on all deployments and training since you look silly in cammies toting around a Mameluke sword.
EDC is a Benchmade 525.

Here's the question:
Good chance of my unit getting called up this fall for deployment and am seriously considerng getting some Infi.

What's everyone recommend?

As an aside - I am not a grunt. In the Marines, as in my civilian job, I am support type of guy. Looks like I'll probably end up as a Support Co. (Motor-T, Heavy Equip, & the Cooks) Commander. I can't be sporting a Battle Mistress on my flack...

Oh, and I also have freakishly small girly hands for a guy that's 6' 1" and near 200 lbs.

If you want a knife with thinner handles, I HIGHLY recommend getting an old style Satin Jack or Badger Attack 3.... Both have thin handles. There are others, such as the mean street and the Active Duty, but the Satin Jack, AS FAR AS I KNOW is the largest blade with a handle that thin. If you have trouble finding one, you can contact me.

You may want to snag a Satin Jack Tac to replace the Kbar with,,

it seems to be the perfect size blade for a general purpose utility knife, and those Tac scales really feel nice in the hand,,

What about a tan Hell razor with the standard handles. This knife would fit the bill perfectly.

GlassJax,
Welcome to the Busse forum. The Satin Jack Tac is a fine blade, if you want something smaller look for a Meaner (or LeanerMeaner)Street

:D:D

GlassJax, welcome to the trough man...

You may want to see if there are any hogs around where you are who could let you get some tactile decisioning made.

THe SJ is a great field knife, and I think is comparable in size (OAL) to the KaBar.

The original 1/4, the 3/16, or the new TAC model would serve you nicely.

And you have time to get some nice pants made for whatever you decide on also.

Thanks for the welcome all.

I'll check out the satin jack tac and the hell razor. I see at the company store that they offer normal and mag scales. Is there a big differance? I said I had small hands (I wear a med. size in most gloves) so sould I stick with the standard, or go with the mag?

I probably won't be ordering the knife till Augest timeframe, as I see no way to drop that sort of money on a knife till I have orders-in-hand and am able to pull a lil guilt trip on the wife.

Anyway, a few more questions... Will the Hell Razor still be available in a few months. I'm looking for a good drop-point utility blade in the 5 to 7 inch range. Are some new models coming out before then? I'm kind of leary of the secondary market as I have no idea what they originally coats, yet alone what a going rate now.

Again, thanks for the welcome.

FYI.... The HR is not a drop point knife. Look carefully, it has a swedge. I'm sure it will still more than serve your purpose though.

Glasjax- Welcome to you.
I'm a Former Marine and I have exactly 1 Kabar which is engraved and sits with all my other keepsakes. I broke several and ended up carrying an original SJ when in the desert. I now have the newer SJTAC but am also looking at the HR. You really don't need anything bigger as you won't be doing alot of chopping and with the right sheath you can make it disappear under your uniform blouse.

Just my .02 worth

Welcome to the trough!
In almost any circumstance I can imagine, from deployment to hunting to yardwork to survival. The Satin Jack TAC is the best all around user and carrier. The handle is a very good general purpose design and very fast in the hand. It is large enough to fill almost any hand, but narrow enough as not overwhelm your grip in multi positions. (I have Medium-Large hands, but with severe psoriatic arthritis)
I don't know if you would call the SJT a drop point(a drop point is my favorite and this style is more than adequate if that is what you want), but it is one of the best utilitarian blades in the range of size. It digs, chops, slices and keeps comin' back for more. The only thing that might be a roadblock for anyone using an SJT is sharpening. I personally had no problems (just lucky, I guess), but the convex edge seems to take some research and practice to sharpen if you're not familiar with it.

Good Luck, and Thank You for serving!

I have even smaller hands....size small in a mens glove. Now that I have the Satin Jack L.E., the Hell Razor, and the Heavy Heart I would suggest you go first with the Hell Razor standard handles...nice and slim but still fills the hand and then the Satin Jack which is heavier(thicker steel) but still has the flat handles. The Hell Razor is very fast in the hand and fells like a feather compared to the SJ or HH.

Try to find someone with all three and try them out to see how they feel to you.

Ciao
Ron
