I finished Chapters 3 and 4 of "CJKV Information Processing" Second Edition over the holiday break. Chapter 3 ended up being 107 typeset pages, and Chapter 4 was 103 pages. (In addition to being the author of my books, I also typeset them.) By comparison, these chapters totalled 150 pages in First Edition, 72 pages for Chapter 3, and 78 pages for Chapter 4, which was published at the end of 1998. See:http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/cjkvinfo/

Anyway, check out the first pages for these two revised chapters, specifically the first letter of the first four paragraphs: http://lundestudio.com/CJKV2E/ch3-p1+ch4-p1.pdf

Ken,

I assume you mean that "typeset" in this context means you code them for printing? When I was in college, we used something called "TeX" for this purpose. Do you use a similar product? Something from in-house?

Adobe InDesign CS3-J (Japanese version).:thumbup:

For my first book, "Understanding Japanese Information Processing" (O'Reilly, 1993), I used Aldus PageMaker-J (which became Adobe PageMaker after we bought Aldus) and output to photographic film using a photo imagesetter. I think the resolution was 2540-dpi. For my second book, "CJKV Information Processing" (O'Reilly, 1998), I used Adobe FrameMaker 5.5J, and also output to film at 2400-dpi. For its second printing, in late 2002, I was able to provide the book in PDF, with all fonts embedded. For Second Edition, I will provide PDF to my publisher. These days, it is possible to print direct to plate using PDF.

The Phot-HOG-rapher Code. :D

I like to put little gems (aka, Easter Eggs) in my books. One of the ones I put into Chapter 3's revision is a footnote to the use of the word "assume":

In case you were not aware, the "assume" is an acronym.
