Info about an older BK2...

Hello all.

I have a BK2 that I purchased in about 1995. It's the vesrion with the light gray coating, and comes with an Eagle sheath.

Can anybody give me some info on the blade? What steel is it, Rockwell numbers, who made it, and how does it compare to current production?

Also, I never really used the knife, so it became a practice knife to test out various sharpening techniques. As such, I was thinking of having re-sharpened/re-ground by the factory. Since it wasn't made by Ka-bar, is this even possible? If not, can anybody recommend a good bladesmith that works with Beckers?

Thanks for the help.

This is just a guess but I'm going to say the rockwell is around 56-58.

Do you have any pictures??

Sorry Flexxx, no pics.

I guess I might have a aprtial answer...

It looks (well, originally looked) like the sterile gray powder coat model in this thread...

So, I'm assuming it was made by Blackjack. But beyond that, I know nothing about the specifics. I did read a post somewhere that mentioned that these models (gray powder coat) weren't the best of the series, so I guess I'd like to know more.

Yeah - sounds like a blackjack according to the FAQ. Specs and the design on the BK-2 has pretty much been the same with blackjack, camillus and kabar (aside from some different coatings and a few serrated models). 1095 cro-van is actually the same steel as 0170-6 or 50-100B (just a different way of marketing it) and the steel has always been HT'd to around 56-58hrc.

looks like you found the FAQ :D

that mostly covers the maker, the materials, and all that.

nope, the manufacturer is long gone. you'll probably have to ask around for a sharpening service. maybe one of our lads here? i'm sure someone could put a wicked convex on that for you if it's not too badly in need of a reprofiling.

what other specific questions do you have?

The FAQ isn't clear on the steel...

oo Steel: 0170-6 or 1095 (depends on literature/generation?)

Any way to determine this more accurately?

not really, short of sending it out. Ethan could confirm, but if you peruse the literature and cataligs, that's what they say.

some accounts say 52-100, but apparently that is quite wrong according to Ethan.

20-25 and more years plus many changes in that time obscures a few bodies

Well seeing as though my post was totally ignored, I'll cite Mr. Tsujimoto here on our own site and his more in depth explanation posted here at another forum.

1095 cro-van IS the same steel as 0170-6 / 170-06 which IS 52-100 and on several occasions has simply just been referred to as regular ol' 1095 (at least in Kabar's history). (heck, let's toss in another citation about 0170-6 and 52-100)

Really though, I don't see it mattering much. They're all very good steels and all have been HT'd to the same range in the BK-2's history (56-58hrc). Even if it is regular old 1095, 1095 is still a very good steel; perhaps a bit less wear and corrosion resistant than 1095cro-van, but I don't think the difference would be that noticeable. Either set it aside as a collector piece and pick up new BK-2 or get some use out of it
