Hello,
I have a knife that I would like to get opinions about.
Click here to see the knife.
This was grcadfathers and I think it was made for him, at least that's the story. It's dated 1884 and the blade is stamped STERLING and also a maker's mark 22 LI with the initials H LL M.
Can anyone enlighten me as to the maker and if you've seen a knife like this.
Thanks,

Looks like it has a marlinspike (marlinespike), which is used for undoing what's called a "marline", a thinner gauge of rope used to wrap around the very thick mooring ropes used to tie large boats to the dock. This, and what looks to be like some type of stain/corrosion-resistant steel, leads me to believe it might be some sort of seaman's knife.
You might want to post this over at Bernard Levine's sub-forum, I'm sure someone over there will have a better idea.

Yes, fruit knife. Before there was stainless steel, they used sterling silver to prevent the blade from contaminating the taste of the fruit.
