Last year I got 18 knives, production and customs.

Most were acquired over the Net.

456,

Welcome to the forums. I hope you can take a little time to stick around and enjoy yourself.

It is going to be pretty hard to get a full standard survey completed this way. Also, keep in mind that you will probably not get a good normal sampling. Some of the questions such as how many knives we buy, or how many $ do we spend are very sensitive (our wives may cause great physical harm to us if they found out

).

The good news is that much information can be had if you run a search on this site. These topics come up individually very often. It will not be perfect, but, it will be fast and probably as accurate as it will ever get.

Regarding your last two questions; Just about all of us start out buying whatever is available from the local knife store(factory). As we become more involved in the hobby, and hopefully older, wiser, and wealthier, we begin to buy better and ultimately this leads to custom knives.

This group likes to play on the web (hence this site) and it tends to buy on the web. Although, we also buy at brick and mortar stores and at local and regional trade shows. You can gage this by looking at the activity on Ebay.com and on Exchange forum on this site. The determining factors are price and availability (some of the knives we collect are relatively rare - and the web is the best way to find them).

Good luck with your paper.

* USA
* It varies (I say this because it's too depressing to actually keep a running tally).
* I seem to have spent over $3000 on knives last year.

* Production and handmade.
* Most were bought online.

*from which country are you?

USA

*how many knives do you buy a year?

Sixty to eighty. But, there you have to ask about why those knives are purchased. Many are given as gifts. Some are purchased for practical use. Some as "investments" meaning that I'll trade or sell them shortly, hopefully at a profit, and some for my collection.

*what is the average amount of money you spend in total a year?

Spend on knives, I assume. This question also needs clarification. For example, does travel to Atlanta for the Blade Show count as spending on knives? Does the cost of running my website count?

*factory or custom?

Both

*do you buy online?

Yes

This questionairre will be highly biased, as anyone who answers will, by definition, be a knife person. As far as it relates to Knife people, it may be a decent representation. Good luck on your thesis.

I am from the good ol' USA.

I buy around 3 knives a year.

I average around $250 a year for knives.

Factory knives are the only ones I can afford.

I'd say that 2 out of every 3 knives are purchased online.

Usually about 10 or 12

According to my tax return about $1000

Factory - can't afford custom yet!

I buy about half my knives online now

Welcome 456:

Country: New Zealand

Knives/year: about 25

$US/year: $US400

Factory/Custom: Factory (I mainly buy really old pocket knives in poor condition, and I get them back into reasonable condition - hence the low buying price!)

Online: Not yet - but I will

All the best for your survey - will you publish the results on this site?
