Hey Guys, another new person here questing after SOG info.
Looking for an EDC that is unobtrusive and can be used quickly with one hand with enough speed and edge to save my neck if my tie gets in a machine at work (for example) without freaking out any of my co-workers or making too large a bulge in my pocket.
I may have narrowed it down to either the SOG Flash one combo edge or maybe the SOG Mini X ray Vision, and am interested in opinions or suggestions for anything else under $100. ??!!??

Would you recomend it over the other two or just for a look at it?
I had originally discounted it because of it's higher weight and that I am looking to stay away from a lockback design if possible...however...if there is a specific reason for the recomendation, please let me know.

i just think its a cool little knife . i own a flash 2 , and that looks rather weapony (although i don`t know about the flash 1) where as the twitch 2 looks a lot more gentlemanly . i`m sure someone else will be able to give you a better opinion , as i don`t work in office

You may want to consider a non-assisted opening knife for a couple reasons.

1.) I hate to say this, but any knife will freak out your co-workers if they're so predisposed. That's just an ugly fact of society today. People who've never seen an assisted opening knife are likely to think it's "switchblade".

2.) Many of SOG's assisted opening knives have safeties. While it's a great feature for most owners, in your situation it might be a potentially fatal. If you're getting dragged face-first into some machinery by your tie, you're not going to have the time to go fumbling around with a tiny latch on your knife.

Since you're worried (and with good reason) about saving your life and saving your job, choose one of SOGs non-assisted openers.

A Tomcat 3.0, the Arcitech, or the titanium handled Vision look upscale and classy, so it's easy to pass them off as non-threatening pocket knives. You can also open them, slowly with 2 hands, around any co-workers who might panic. If you have to, those knives have a thumbstud for instant one-handed opening without having to unlock a safety.

Thank you very much, I had forgotten about the safety. Yeah, that brings a whole new light to it. Anyone had any good or bad experiences with the mini xray vision??
I want to keep the blade 3" or under and the cost under $100 while having good steel, fast one handed opening, and preferably no fingers in front of the blade path when I unlock it. Any suggestions would be most gratifying, thanks.

SOG's knives are invariably well made and the Mini X-Ray is no exception.

In your circumstances, it has a couple of major points in its favor. 1.) It's small, so none of your co-workers will freak out. 2.) It's non-assisted so none of your co-workers will freak out and you won't be fumbling with a latch in an emergeny. 3.) It has Pentagon style serrations so it will slash through tough material (like your tie) in an instant, if need be. 4.) It's got a special clip which allows it to completely disappear inside your pocket so none of your co-workers will even see it. The clip has cleats on it so you can yank it free of your pocket in a hurry but at the same time it doesn't look like a knife clip, and doesn't have any brand logos on it, either.

I hope SOG doesn't mind me linking up one of their pics...

Vaako, very well explained. Very good descriptions on SOG knives.

I have all the ones ubercoupe ask about and it would be hard for me to choose between them. :D

But since my EDC is a discontinued SOG Night Vision, and it has the famous arc lock smooth as silk "one hand open" and "one hand closing action".

As does the SOG mini X-ray Vision, I would say without a doubt, go with the X-ray and you will never be sorry. I carried one for 3 years in my pocket along with my NV, and it was an amazing little knife with big knife features all in a smaller subtle package.

The ats-34 steel is a plus and the blade is just simply beautiful.

i wouldn`t go with a sog for this purpose i would go with a spyderco , something small like a delica 3

One thing, though. The Delica has the same drawbacks most clip-equipped folders have. First, the knife clip looks like a knife clip.

IIRC, Spyderco pioneered/ popularized the folding knife clip and their clips (with the exception of the round wire versions) definitely look like the stereotypical knife clips. Most Spyderco clips are even stamped with the company logo. Ubercoupe isn't going to fool anyone that it's a pager or a phone.

Second, on just about every folder, including the Spyderco Delicas, a piece of the handle sticks out of your pocket with some screws holding the clip.

It doesn't matter if the folder is carried "point up" or "point down" (and from those official Spyderco shots, the new Delicas are set up for both types of carry on either side of the knife), it's still the same problem. You've got a chunk of knife handle sticking out of your pants (or waistband). That's the kind of thing that attracts the sometimes-unfriendly attention of company security guards. It won't help things if someone prejudices them by making a panicky call about "a guy with a knife", either. I think that's what he was getting at when he said some people might get freaked out at the office.

Since the Mini X-Ray totally disappears into the pocket, it really doesn't look like a knife, especially if you clip a pager or a pen next to it.

you bastards convinced me to spend more of my hard cash on the Mini X-Ray, i have to stop spending time on line :)

Thank you all for the info!
Even though I only work in an upscale camera shop and photolab, frightening customers, co-workers, and bosses, is not a work-safe activity. The mini sounds right, small enough to be unobtrusive, yet serious enough for anything that could come up at work.
