i started this thread for anybody looking for advice on the sand paper mouse pad method of sharpening busse's convex edge. i know it's been talked about before but with all the new busse convex's showing up it may be helpful.

this is NOT for advertising but please post your links for supplies and the type of paper you buy as well as the grits you use through out your method.

also whether you use a mouse pad backer or leather.

keep it simple and constructive and pics will be appreciated.

thanks.

I use a leather strop and some of the bark river compound, works great, easy to do and easy to maintain your edge.

two great links listed but where to buy paper and compound, links to dealers you have used?

Paper is easy - any automotive supply store that sells supplies for body work. Just get the fine grit wet/dry finish papers.

I now use a Harbor Freight 1x30 belt grinder.

Strop and compound, and 1x30 belts can be had from Lee Valley tools.

Skip the mouspad. An old copy of Field & Stream, in addition to being appropriate for knife sharpening, is a good base for the sandpaper, Use the edge-side, not the binding side towards the handle.

I've never been able to sharpen anything by hand with the knife facing down. but I'm decent using the sharpening media in hand, with the knife on a table or flat.

the file sharpening method can be modified to accommodate wood+mousepad+sand paper for those who are like me.

like this, except with a peice of wood with a mouse pad stapled to it, and sand paper wrapped around and fastened on the back.

You can get 3M sandpaper up to 2000 grit at most auto supply stores; Pep-Boys, Autozone, etc. Lee Valley apparently has sanding belts and leather stropping belts for 1"x30" belt sanders.

wish the company store would get some Air Bleeder Strops back in :grumpy::D

I have picked up the JRE Industries latest rig which is called the EMS system. Comes complete with all the various paper grits, and is so simple a monkey could convex sharpen on it! It's easy to hold, safe to hold, and makes quick work of changing grits all whereever you want to do some sharpening....inside, outside, camping, in your recliner watching the booob tube! Plus the guys are members here, Dan and his pal... Check out their new 'field strops' too, get 'em both and keep your edge up!

I get down to stropping first with this move....

and then with one of these....

Oh, you didn't get a Busse Combat "Air Bleeder" Leather Strop way back in March '05? Too bad, so sad. :(

This strop looks airbleedery. Only more expensive and more complicated.

I generally thin just behind the edge with a DMT D8XX 120 grit diamond stone, remove its scratches with a DMT D8C 325 grit diamond stone, and then sharpen with a series of waterstones (usually the 1000 grit, 2000 grit, and 8000 grit Shapton Glasstones) using some of the advice given by Koki of JCK. The rotation around the shoulders, elbows, wrists, and fingers coupled with the compression of the skin, muscles, fat, and connective tissue of the involved parts makes me the mousepad and the stones the sandpaper.

Lately, I've been sharpening using C-Dawg's method:

And the results have been a little less convex than may be desired, but the edges are consistantly sharper.
