I was wondering if anybody here has used or owns any knives made by dale sandberg. and if you have how good are they IE edge holding and toughness ECT. as i am looking to see if there are a good useing knife.

Hi,

I've had two of Dale's knives, with another on order (I gave the other two to friends as gifts after using them a while). Dale makes a great knife. They don't come much tougher - keep in mind these are cut out of the huge bandsaw blades used in lumbermills (that's what Dale does for a regular job - sharpen sawblades for mills). This also means that they hold a good edge - the steel is, for th emost part I believe, L6 - and Dale knows how to heat treat it.

As for the tough part - I've had a short blade (8" smatchet) and a long one (12" machete), and I do believe you could pound these knives into a stump and use them as a springboard (step) without ill effect on the blade. The handles a cast on - they will not come off period. Dale bolts a 1/4" steel plate to the butt so you can hammer with it. If you get it with the paracord wrap the grip is secure.

Very good value for the money, if you don't mind the 6 month wait.

That sound abought what i am looking for i want a knife that i can beat the crap out of when i am camping in the back woods and know that it will not let me down do you know if he does custom orders for people as for a six month wait that is not as long awaiting list as some makers have if it is as good as you say then it is worth the wait

A SIX MONTH WAIT for a knife is OKAY? It sounds to me that if Dale is THAT busy, then he needs to either quit his "day job" or hire some help!.:).

I have a smatchet that Dale made a few years ago and it is a wonderful using knife for all deeds. It holds an edge very well and throws the fear of GOD into anyone who sees it.

I also have a Smachet without the hand guard in my "end of the world" kit. I had only handled stainless blades before the Smachet: so I ran my thumb along the blade to test the sharpness-bad move. I use it to split small logs.

I too have a smachet that I purchased about 2-3 yrs ago. I use it on backpacking trips to clear brush and chop wood. It takes a good edge on my sharpmaker and holds it. I got mine in about 4 weeks at the time I ordered it. Dale has apparently grown very popular. get one , it's a good deal.
