Info on Apprentice Blank

Just picked up this neat little knife recently and want to get some info on it.

Does anyone know what steel this one is made of. I have heard that most apprentice blanks are 5160. But I have also heard that there were D2 and A2
blanks made.

5160, had one. They come with no edge just a primary grind. Talked to the Boss Hog about those. Nice knives, HTed, so use a bastard file to put an edge on it and polish with stones/paper. I wouldn't use a grinder, the Boss said 5160 reacts poorly to friction/heat.

I am about to grab one of these. So from what I read above is it safe to say all Apprentice knives are 5160 and were heat treated in the Busse shop?

Where are you guys getting your apprentice blanks?

All I got to work with is this one:

I grabbed it off the exchange sometime back and paid about 70 or 80 bucks for it.

Someday I will get around to finishing it up with some wood handles.

That reminds me, I have one of those somewhere to be finished.
We should have an "Apprentice Blank Build-off"! Everyone starts off with an unfinished, unhandled knife ( I guess it could be any Busse knife you are willing to modify), give them a couple of weeks and let the guys here on the forum be the judge of the winner!
