I've been a fan of Benchmade for about 10 years, buying one every once in a while. However, I apparently missed the period when they sold knives in M2hs.

I was just wondering if I could get some information about this steel. I have read very little about it and was hoping you all could educate me on it. When it was used, why it was discontinued, how it holds an edge, difficulty of sharpening, etc? Also, What models was it available in? Thanks.

M2 was used on the 710, Nimravus, Ascent 835, Ritter Grip, 800 AFCK and (I KNOW I'm missing more...) was discontinued due to the fact that it destroyed tooling equipment and ate through sanding belts due to it's toughness and high hardness. It holds an amazing edge, takes a beautiful polish, and is fairly easy to sharpen If you don't try to do this with a Sharpmaker. A Wicked Edge or Edge Pro Apex will be your best friend next to Benchmade's LifeSharp service.

I bvelieve the Ritters were the last to use M2, so date-wise, apx. three to four years ago it went out of service. I recall they found some and decided to do a limited run to use it up. Replacement blades are impossible to find. A whole bunch of us own safe queens made in M2 and prices on the secondary market are insane.

I've got 2 710's, 1 full size Ritter and 1 mini Ritter.
I love them all.
Nothing else holds an edge like M2.
I use mine.
They very rarely need sharpening and when it does, I have no issues getting it lazer sharp.
M2 is my grail steel, for sure.
I've got A2, D2, M4, M390, Elmax.....and so on.
M2 is tops!

This was my first Axis lock, and I paid the extra few bucks for the m2. The knife was bought because I liked the idea of the lock and the look of the knife
as I had no idea what I was buying and, as it turned out, ignorance is bliss. Dumb luck that I saw the add and bought this knife.
Bought from the internet, and it has spawned a love of Benchmade knives that is active to this day. Just got the Contego, it is m4.
Frank.
