trying to identify this knife & about when it was made? was told it's a camillus pilot survival knife from wwII (made before 1962). i can't figure out if it's from wwII or vietnam? it's 9 1/2 in. long (5 in. blade), has dark leather handle with grooves, saw teeth on top of blade and has hex shaped nut pommel.

went to the camillus site and it sounds like the pilot survival knife but the pommel is described as "round". the knife I have has a hex shaped nut pommel? what do you think?

My favorite knife.
The earlier Jet Pilots (1957-1962) had 6" blades.
Production of the 5 inch bladed knives began in 1962, and from that time until 1967, there was no date stamped on the hex-pommel. The Ricasso should be marked: Camillus, NY. The blades on all of these I have seen from that era are blued. After '67, the manufacturer (either Camillus or Ontario) should be stamped on the hex pommel, with the month and year of manufacture. There have been many variations of the the 'Jet Pilot'; civilian models, high polished or plated blades, commemoratives, ect. The sheaths were typically sewn or tied onto a SB pilot's vest, upside down.

thanks for clarifying this. based on your info & the history i've been given about this knife, i'd guess this one was made near 62.

The sheaths on the AF survival vests are sewn rightside up (I was active duty AF for 8 Yrs 88-96, I worked in survival equipment)

Ours were configured differently.

I almost went into the Army to be a combat engineer, but decided at the last minute to go into the AF. It ended up working well for me.

When I was in Desert Shield/Storm I made 300 a month per diem living in tent city. I was asked If I would give my tent up to some army guardsmen and I would be moved to a hotel. I ended up in a nice hotel with a 7th floor view and 2,500 dollars per diem a month. I felt like the "beverly hillbillies".
