Hi,

I was going through an old gym bag and turned up 2 brand new CS fixed blade knives that I bought about 1990 - 1992.

One is the Peace Keeper I and is double edged. It says Made in Japan for Cold Steel Knives. It has a thick fabric sheath and is still razor sharp.

The other is the Bush Ranger and is single edged like a thin bowie. It says Made in Japan for Cold Steel Knives. It has a leather sheath and is also razor sharp. They're satin finish, about 1' long OAL + or -.

I have no clue what the steel is but they're both real slashers. They have a grippy rubber polymer handle with rubber finger guards - Kraton is what I think they were called.

I have no idea what the steel is?

Anyone please? :)

Thanks guys AUS8 sounds right to me too. Everyhing they were making back then was AUS8 except there was a Carbon V Trailmaster I think.

i agree about the aus8 info. at that time c.s. was using aus8, c.5, & vg10 laminate ion various mdls. i still hav a trail master in carbon5. i do'nt know what i did with my bush ranger.most of the offerings in that period were good quality.

sodak - Are they old stock, almost 20 yrs old? Or, are they newer versons with the plastic or (kydex?) sheaths?

I can't find anything on Google about them.

My Bush Ranger is satin and has a tree (forget the name - African plains tree) etching on the upper left side of the blade as you hold it pointing outward.

Mine are old with leather sheaths. I pretty much stuck to Carbon V when buying CS knives, except for the Voyager and kitchen knives.

Yeah mine has a cheapo leather sheath - but it works. I've never carried it just stored it in the sheath.

Maybe it's Carbon V - I honestly don't recall it being offered in anything but the Trail Master back then?

Ah-Ha! I have an old video of CS PROOF which is so old I hope it will work, that'll tell all!

Reporting back after watching the 1st "Proof" tape ever made. When I thought that CS was the best knife ever made & Lynn Thompson had learned the "riddle of steel" from Krom, the god of steel, himself.

It was strange going back and seeing Lynn & his main chopping dude - so much younger. Not a huge lineup then either.

Anyway my two knives the Peace Keeper I and the Bush Ranger were made in Carbon V if you got the black coated one and in AUS8 if you got the satin finish.

The Peace Keeper I AUS8 was more flexible and went through the car hood right to the hilt but the Carbon V just got the point through - barely!

They didn't try the Bush Ranger in either model on the car hood or bending it with the pipe. They just had a guy doing a pull-up on it.

Any speculation why the Carbon V was so much more rigid and not as sharp as the Peace Keeper I in the "through the car hood test"?
