Guys,
I know this may be a little off subject, but if you think about it, a fish gig does have a point.

Anyway, anyone have any idea where I can get some info on how to forge fish and frog gigs? You can't find 'em around anymore and if a guy's going to gig someone is going to have to make them. Figured it just as well be me

Thanks!

Vous n'êtes pas la Louisiane, n'est-ce pas?
(You aren't from Louisiana, are you?) Just kidding!!!

I would just use a welding rod and sharpen the end of it. That's what we used for flounder down here on the Gulf Coast. We don't have a barb on the end, it is just a smooth point. Once you gig the fish and it is pinned to the bottom, we just reach under and bring up the little fella. If gigging from a boat then a barb would be a must.

For frogs, we weren't allowed to break the skin so we used a bona-fide frog gig that was spring operated. I have seen the three pronged gigs but I never used one. It was pretty exciting when one of the younger fellas got a water mocassin! It has been years since I have gone "froggin'". Your posting brings up some fond memories.

CL,
Around here, gigging frogs and fish are still a legal sport. We use the 3-pronged gigs around here. But, we can't find them anymore. I thought if I could figure out how to make them, I might have a profitable side-line to my knife business.

Thanks for the post.

It is still legal here as well, I just haven't done it since I was a teenager! I will check with some of the fishermen around Bolivar and see what they have been using. Will email you once I find out.
