I recently picked up a Large Clip point plain edge in an auction for $34 and have been having trouble getting information on this knife. Everything I search yields the VG1 version of the knife. I've seen where they can be either 440 or Aus8A and the line started in the early 90's. Really any knowledge and insight is appreciated. Did I get a decent deal on it?

Nice one. A lot of folks like the older voyagers better. The handles are the main reason.

The Voyagers were originally made in Japan by G.Sakai of Seki. The model you have remained unchanged for most of the 1990s.
As far as I am aware they were always Aus8. The handle design changed a bit over time and the plastic clip was replaced with a metal one in 1999. Only in 2007 were the CS folders sold with VG1. After 2008 production was moved from Japan to Taiwan, continuing to use Aus8 imported from Japan because VG1 wasn't exportable. Taiwan production continues with last year's change to CTS BD1 steel.

I have one of the integral clip gunsite folders that has some sentimental value so I never carry it. How do the newer 4 inch tanto bladed voyagers compare to the 90s models?
