The one type of knife that I do not own is the traditional type folder such as a Large Toothpick. I would appreciate any suggestions as to which manufacturer or custom maker produces a knife of this type using premium blade steel. A budget of $150 would be about the upper end for me for a really nice keeper.
Thanks.

Hi,

Check out GEC's offerings, they have some nice 4" closed ones. And they use 1095 with an awesome heat treatment.

I've had my eye on Schatt and Morgan's File and Wire Line toothpick (ATS 34 steel, 5" closed) for some time:

If you check around, there are a few places listing it for under $90 shipped.

Queen has the same model but simpler and in D2 steel for around $60.

I have had that one for a while. And I must say there is nothing like eating a steak with that knife.
It didn't come that sharp. Wich was pretty disappointing for a knife of this pricepoint. But after a bit of reprofiling it's perfect. Love it

kreole,

That is what I'm looking for! I really like ATS-34. Slider817, how is the fit and finish? Do you consider it to be a well made knife? Thanks guys.

dalee 100, I visited Great Easterns website and looked at all of their 2009,10,11 models. I liked the "River Boat Gambler" the best :)

I think it's overal pretty good. I think it's a well made knife. Again was not happy with the factory edge so if you don't know how to sharpen I would be wary, although j could have just gotten a fluke. But overal it's pretty nice. And I think a good value. It's well made in my opinion but I have allot more modern knives than I do traditional so the minor points that the real traditional addicts nit-pick about are not my thing (custom slippys for $500) but it's pretty good, just as good as my higher end cases like my Backpocket which is a Tony Bose Colaboration and just as good as my Queens and Great Easterns

Just as an aside a great large single blade slippy is the Case Backpocket they are very slim. Have a nice halfstop and are quite beutiful in my opinion. Not a toothpick design though

Queen makes a large toothpick in D2. You'd want to plan on sharpening it, as it would most likely not be that great out of the box. Otherwise it will be a good knife at a very good price.

The knives in the Schatt&Morgan File & Wire series mentioned above are generally very well made, and the ATS-34 is a better steel than you would normally see in a production slipjoint.

You could also check the A.G. Russell website. They sometimes have some high-quality but less commonly available slipjoints.
