Years ago I bought an ATAK knife from Kevin McClung. It was from the first civilian run after he delivered the knives to the east and west coast SEALS.

It has a KIDEX sheath and serial number is A615. The serial number is on the back of the sheath and on the knife with Mad Dog and also ATAK engraved on it.

The knife is as close to pristine as could be, it was never used other than taking it out of the sheath. Does anyone have any idea what the value of this is? I'm looking to sell. My friend directed me here and said I might be able to get some good info on this knife. He told me some of these knives have appreciated greatly in value, so I figured I would give it a shot.

I talked to Kevin McClung shortly after buying the knife in 1992 or so and he seemed like an interesting sort of guy, a little on the mad scientist side I would say.

I know next to nothing about knives other than some gun store recommendations on what is a decent folder. Any help, info, or where to go look is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Perhaps Bernard Levine's Knife Collecting subforum would be another good place to ask.

I have an ATAK2 but don't know what the originals are worth. I expect a LOT.

And welcome to BF! We hope to see you around on other topics.

"Appreciated" is probably the understatement of the century.

Scott Moore might be one person to check with: http://www.mooreknives.net/contact.html

TF would probably be the best sale forum. I would expect it to go very quickly.

Thanks both of you. I like knives, but am no expert. I bought this because it sounded cool, pure and simple. I like your basic high end low end folder pocket knives like spyderco and benchmade and such but had no idea that knife collecting was such a big deal.

One thing to be aware of is that there is some political baggage lurking not too far below the surface with respect to MD, and perhaps with respect to MD and BF in particular.

Trying to be completely objective here... some people have personal issues with Kevin and by extension, with his products. Others are fiercely loyal MD acolytes. You will get very different responses, depending on where you pose your queries.

I was trying to direct you toward the less turbulent waters.

Thanks a lot. I talked to Kevin one time and he seemed to be to me to be like a mad scientist type. Brilliant about knife stuff, at least to me. He explained a lot of things about the knife which I can't recall 17 years later, but he was interesting.

But I can see why some might have strong opinions. Since I like guns more than knives, I'm probably going to sell the knife once I have a decent idea of the value.

Irondoc, welcome to Bladeforums. Please familiarize yourself with the rules here. We do not allow selling or offering for sale except by Gold members at least and all selling needs to be done in the Exchange forums.

The less said, the better. No one else brought up possible problems with Mad Dog knives except you.

No problem, I just need a little info and I appreciate how people have helped me since I'm a novice with this stuff.
