Info on "MOKI" anyone?

I attended a local knife show recently and saw some beautiful lockbacks in abalone, MOP and sea snail, mirror polished inside and out - really nice stuff. But here's the thing, these were made by a company called Moki in Japan. Does anyone know of these people, REAL level of quality, etc.?

Moki, in Seki City, Japan, is one of the better knife companies you're likely to meet. Most of their production is "OEM" work for other names you may be familiar with, like Spyderco, Al Mar, Cold Steel, Fällkniven, Beretta, and more.

They also make knives under their own name, most of which don't make it to the North American market. LagaNet, the Canadian distributor for Fällkniven, is now importing several Moki models. You can see the pictures and specifications on their page. I have some pretty pictures on my page too.

I have a folder by Berreta that was made by Moki.Very well made fit & finish. They can make good quality knives under different companies like James M.pointed out.

Yeah, Moki has some impressive stuff. Unfortunately, they don't seem to be really well known in America, or even outside of Japan for that matter.

The Spyderco Factory Outlet store has sold Moki knives for some time and they recently put up pics on their web site.

Well, Mike and Friends had several on auction at eBay and I lucked out on getting one of them with an ATS-34 blade 2 1/2" long, very nice knife, and came RAZOR sharp out of the box.

Nice knife and I've always liked the looks of the other Moki's mentioned above, with the inlay work.

I collect various Al Mar knives and they are made by Moki. Some models are nearly identical to Mokis own models. Fit & finish is first class. Even better than on many custom handmades and priced acordingly. Check out the Amaranth. Very nice knife and a very close realtive to the Al Mar 1003SS. These knives also put the word sharp in a new perspective.

I agree about the quality of Moki knives. I like the model called the "Silver Feather". It is a perfect gents/everyday carry knife, and I have yet to see one of them that wasnt perfectly put together. And, you can get them for around $30!

I have not seen a whole bunch of them, but have see a few. Each was a folder with great action and high quality fit and finish.

swa737, Thanks it is a nice knife, I felt lucky to win the auction, but its not something I'll do again real soon, that auction stuff is too much for me, I know some like it a lot but not me!

Pelle, I fully agree, this knife has an edge that was SUPER sharp out of the box, would cut hair off the top level of the hair, pretty sharp, cut some boxes with it and still kept it's edge pretty good. The handle is very comfortable and the lock up is solid, no blade wobble what so ever.

Moki knives are made by the Moki Knife company in Seki City, Japan.

They were imported by Spyderco beginning in 1988.

Quality is excellent. Sales have not been good primarily to to the high prices.

Spyderco Factory Outlet (Golden) still has some Moki pieces at some very good prices. The piece that Gary showed was custom made by Spyderco. there are also some with scrim of Big cats. Still some left.

Spyderco is in the middle of restructuring their website. When completed, we will again display Moki pieces.

Hope this helps.

My most perfectly made knife is a MOKI "Perfect Thuja".
Kind of a letter opener or stiletto, but with absolutely no flaw. In a beautiful leather sheath.

I don't think they've got a website of their own.

The Moki "Perfect" (Thuja burl) looks a lot like the slim little fixed blades that LagaNet is distributing in North America in Rosewood and Ebony.

The Thuja burl folders on that German dealer's page also look like models available in North America in Cocobolo.

I don't know why nobody's been able to distribute the whole Moki line in North America and make money at it.

I got a Moki 101K out on account of a question in another thread, and while I was at it I did a couple of fresh scans. Highly polished blade steel still comes out dark sometimes.

2 1/2" of AUS8, stainless bolsters, cocobolo. Not terribly tactical.

Is there anything such as "the whole Moki line", really? I get the impression they concentrate on making knives for other brands and what appears under the Moki label is almost only short series of different models/variations. And distributing lots of models in small numbers...

Moki has many standard models, but they do not maintain much inventory. Certain designs are produced in small quantities as demand requires.

Spyderco Factory Outlet & Ironstone (Kona) are currently maintaining invedntory on a variety of models.

Spyderco is in the middle of a Site modification. There will be a larger Moki section than there is now, but it will be ELU direct.
