Hi

I am able to get Putoline Super DX4 for a rather low price about us$2 per litre, its a four stroke oil.

would like to know if this oil is suitable for oiling steel blades? Are they like motor oil?

Do they have some detergent or additive that may hurt steel knives?

What other use is there? I dont own a bike and go no idea what its good for.

If you are unsure , why not just buy something you know will not harm your knives ?
Breakfree CLP is my recommendation.

I bought a can of it in 2001 for under $10 and the can is still about 1/3 full , I use it at least once a week on something around the house.

Economical and top notch lube for your knives and guns.
( not food safe though).

It won't hurt the steel.

You did not say what kind of steel or knife you wanted to use it on, so I will add a couple of limitations.

I would not use it on any blade that is going to be used around food. There are additives in 10W40 that are poisonous. If using the blades around food I recommend you get mineral oil from the local pharmacy (sold as laxative).

I would not use it to lubricate the pin on a folder. You want thinner oil for that. Get something like the oil sold for sewing machines.

I agree with rebeltf's thinking. Price should not be the primary concern. You won't be using a lot of this. So you might as well buy something better than 10W40.

Even though motor oil will work it is not the best choice. It will not damage the blade but might have a long term effect on some handle materials. It is also a wet lube that will attract dirt and cause grime to build up. A dry lube such as CLP, EEZOX, MILITEC and others are a better choice. A light application of mineral oil also works very well and is easily available and cheap. It is also safe for use in food prep.
