Hey all - got an older version of the Pentagon in a trade today, with the kydex sheath, white plain box, stamped SOG on one side, Seki Japan on the other. Steel etc? any ideas?

Congrats on the new knife! I really like the Pentagon series. My Pentagon that I too got in a trade dates back to the leather sheath days. Anyways, I believe the older ones were AUS-6 but could have been AUS-8. Chis can tell you for sure on Tuesday when he gets back to the office.

thanks for the info, hopefully I get a for sure answer on tuesday. Not a big deal or anything, just curious

You won't have to worry about the knife. Even if it's AUS-6 it's going to work for you. SOG with their AUS-6 is like Buck with their 420HC, they heat treat it well!

If you can, get a Mini Pentagon. It's a nice backup knife. Mine has seen use in the kitchen and out in the woods cutting all sorts of things.

I don't really even plan to put it to hard use, but its good to know that its up to par with the 420 from Buck, I have only had great experiences with it.

And I was debating between the mini and the full size, but a local shop had it and I ended up trading for it, so I didn't have too much of a choice, but I love the handle size, I have bigger hands and I was thinking the mini would be too small.
