I recently picked up a black epoxy coated W49 (blade only)from the Camillus factory closeout stock. Does anyone know the story with this version? Is it the same steel of the regular models (420HC IIRC) ? I haven't seen them offered like this in a completed model. I know that the CUDA fixed blades that came in the coated version were ATS34 instead of the SV30. Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks

I got mine from my a wholesaler who must have bought a ton of stuff.

Not sure which CUDA you are refering to there.

As to the epoxy coated W49........
Things got pretty funky toward the END.

I have never seen a finished W49 of that configuration, but then again I (mercifully) missed the last 6 months.
It may have been an attempt to do a cheaper version for a specific customer that was never completed (several W36s were made that way). I doubt it would have been a particularly attractive knife; either you finish the knife by sanding off the coating around the edges of the tang to blend it with the handle, or you leave the handles unfinished.

Thanks for the info. i was about mistooken about the CUDA steels :o. It was the CQB that had ATS34 or 0170-6c in the black ops.
