I carried a similar Gerber a lot in the early 90’s. The one hand sliding pliers were a big reason. I considered it better than Leathermans available at the time. My son still has it.
I have a black one issued to me in the military in early 90’s….it was/is ok(it can pinch the user between plier handles)but I think it isn’t nearly as useful as my Leatherman issued about a year earlier…still have both, but I carry a Leatherman Wave in my bkpack for weekly use and it is better than both previous mentioned ones for me.
Gerber Multi-plier not the first version of that model I don't think, they changed the look of the pliers jaws in the first few years. There were other jaw sets as well with blasting cap crimpers. I still have mine, not a bad tool. As Runninmike stated they can pinch your hands between the handle sides if you slip off something while using the pliers.
