Hello, I have been lurking around these forums longer then I'd like to admit. I figured it was high time to join and do my first post.

I currently have my eyes set on a William Henry Tom Brown Quest. Does anyone have any comments on this knife? What about the ZDP-189 steel performance/characteristics? Thanks for your time.

As Steven said it does take and keep a wicked edge. I've cut up many a box with mine and when it was not hair poppin' sharp I just stroped it and it was back. A deep hollow (but nearly flat, if you know what I mean??? possibly done on a larger grinding wheel?) and a blade stock of 3/32 means a very fine edge and not much metal going through media as most tactical styled blades. So, it cuts the cardboard like butter, leather as well, which is mostly what I have cut. The thinner build/construction and slender clip point mean that it is a pure cutter, and not a pocket prybar, so if you need that bring your Strider AR/SnG or Emersons. It is interesting to me that Tom Brown would pick a knife like this for his survival school/instructors, but he knows better than me! Would make a fine combo with a larger fixed blade (such as the "Tracker" by Beck or TOPS). And as we all know the best survival knife is "the one we have with us", this baby with the William Henry clip case is great in that regard. Sheeple friendly looks, and good in anything from jeans to suits.

Yes ZDP-189 is amazing stuff however I noticed that the 420 laminate is prone to sraches, no porblem for a user knife which this knife is meant to be. Currently in my EDC rotation, and looking forward to more cutting tests with it.

Thanks,
Scott

Scott,
Thanks for your comments. Looks like this knife is definately in the running for my next big purchuse. I'm retiring in a couple months and the occasion is the perfect excuse to spend a larger then usual sum on a knife.
Thanks again,
Dan

The Quest is an excellent user knife. It is an exceptional slicer. Yes, the 420 laminate scratches easily. It is the very thinnest knife I own.

On the weekend, it is my folder of choice, and I have lots of choices.

I understand that the blade is 3/32" thick. How thick (thin?) is the Quest overall. I enjoy thin, but strong knives.

about 3/8" -remember that there is no pocket clip on this one. It pairs up with the WH clipcase.

Thanks,
Scott

I have not seen one in person, but I will pass on what I have heard. My father has one, and he is pleased. He says it was almost too nice to use. In the past he favored his Bob Dozier knives, saying that nothing else came close in edge holding for the stuff he cuts (including his sebenza). Now he says that this ZDP-189 is noticeably better than his Dozier blades.

I have handled my father's, it is very slim and light. The fit and finish are great, very smooth opening and closing. The blade is ground in typical William Henry style, designed as a slicer, not a chopper or prybar. Since my father says it is better at edgeholding than his Doziers, it must be pretty good.

Whoa, at first I thought this was some sort of double post! Then I looked at the locations, man guys - are you brothers from differant mothers? ;)

That is good to know that the ZDP-189 out cuts Doziers, which are great knives.

Thanks,
Scott

I respect the opinions of your fathers. So much so, I just ordered the Quest. Thanks to everyone for your input. Now I've just got to impatiently wait for the mailman.

Same mother. If the truth must be told, we are twins. He wound up in TN, I wound up in the People's Republik of Kalifornia. I've got the high Sierras right in my back yard, but he can easily get a concealed carry permit. Some tradeoff.

Pics of the EDCs would be cool. Not many photos out there of these cute little knives.

Oops, the secret is out.

Don't forget the Smokies, my playground out here.

Anxiously awaiting the arrival of my carry permit in the mail.....
