Hello everybody,
First and foremost : I AM NOT TROLLING. (had to say this , because it looks that slamming on Ernie has become a popular sport.)
I fell in love with Emerson's designs since i saw a benchmade CQC 7 for the first time.I was a student at that time, so i had't enough money to spend, but damn, didn't it look good....time has passed, the income now is good, but for some reason i have not been able yet to buy myself an E.Knife (funny...now i have the money, but i don't have enough time anymore...either you have bread or you have teeth...).Last friday my girlfriend told me "since next week is your birthday, why don't we go get you an Emerson as my present ?" (geeee, don't you love her ? :) )and so off we went.
I have been able to locate a couple of Emersons in a knife store in Switzerland : mind you that in europe a Commander costs over 300 $ so i had to check a knife before i buy it. I took the commander in my hands, opened it and noticed a side by side play of the blade on his pivot. Lockup was good and solid, the liner was in the correct position and overall the knive looked good.Tightening the pivot screw helped, but i had to do it to a point that the knife was not opening smoothly.I checked a Raven and a specwar at the same shop and they were perfect,so the only possible conclusion was that the commander had a little problem (maybe just 10000 openings and closings in a shop demonstrating how the wave works).Damn...it spoiled my day,i really wanted that commander so bad...but in the end, after much thinking i left it there. If i were in the USA, paying the normal price for that knife maybe, but here i need to have a perfect sample to morally justify such an expense (moreso since it was a present).
Please, tell me : did i do the right thing leaving it there or every Emerson Commander has a little play and i have to rush back to get it ?

You did the right thing of NOT buying it in Europe. For $300 you can even get a custom knife from USA. Buy it from a forumite over here instead or try out worldwideknives.com.

If you need more information check out the "European knife forum" or whatever it´s called.

I had a Commander that after one of many disassemblies had some side-to-side play. Took it apart again and cleaned it properly. No problem with bladeplay after that.

Well, I may be in a position to answer, as my mini is still having problems and has had more problems than most.

I think you did the right thing. If it does not seem right to you it is not right. You would only beat yourself up over it in the future. Even if that was the way they all are (there are not, I do not believe) you could not be fully happy with it. With the kind of money you have to spend especially, wait until you find one you absolutely adore and secure that one for yourself. It will make you happiest in the longrun.

Better to want a perfect knife, then buyer remorse.

There are plenty of Dealers on the Internet that will have zero problem selling you a perfect Commander.

If you need a recommendation, please feel free to email me.
