Hello all, this my first post and I have a question I'm sure you all can help with. I'm wondering about the status of a Commander I bought back in the summer of '98. Its a satin finish, plain edge, but the liners and lock appear to be titanium and slightly thicker than the new models, and as I hold the older one and a new model, the older appears to be slightly heavier. Just wondering if this is an early production model or some kind of custom? I dont have a scanner so I cant show a picture. Just one more thing, when the older model is open, the liner doesnt come out too far and there is always play in the blade and when it closes it rubs against one of the liners. I'dlike to have it fixed but dont know if Emerson does any repair type work and I'm sure he's busy as hell, maybe someone can recommend a good person to get the knife back in good shape, I could'nt do it myself.
Thanks very much for any info and hello again to all. Donald.

P.S.-Forgot one thing in regard to above question. On the Commander in question the blade states "Emerson specwar knives" Thanks

Nowhere,
Does it have a DATE under or in between the "SpecWar" Logo... somewhere ?

If not, then there is a possibility that it is a Custom, or Limited Production.
Would help if you had a Pic to be sure,
Hope that helps.

I don't want to get your hopes up unnecessarily, but if it doesn't say "Emerson Knives Inc.", and does say "Emerson SpecWar Knives", then that is a custom knife. It may be one of the so-called prototype knives Ernie made, with a production handle and hand-ground blade.

Thanks to all for the info, I may have to go with JBravo on the production handle/custom blade situation, that appears to be close to what this is. Just for the record, there is no date anywhere on the blade. I would like to get as many variations of the Commander as I can and would like to know in what way to label this particular version. I think that I'll call Emerson to have it fixed, hopfully they wont hold onto it for a long time.
Thank you all,
Donald.

Nowhere fast,
JBravo is right on. I believe it to be a Custom handground Blade w/ CNC preproduction Handles. Ask Derek if it's real important or have Saun tell you when you send it in.

I'm sorry, not interested in getting rid of the Commander. I'm looking to get as many variations as possible. I think the wave feature is absolutely brilliant, simply put, I believe it makes all other folders obsolete.
Donald.

Donald,

Sounds like you have one of the very early proto commanders. Is the blade a true chisel grind or is it the double V with the chisel edge. With the market for these things being what it is, I do not want to over state anything here as to misrepresent the knife. It sounds like no matter what, you ought to pick up a 2000 version and put the '98 model away for safekeeping.

I would send the knife to us for any work you want done on it. I see you have no email addy. If you are able to do so, dro me a line and I will get back with you.

Hope this does not just add to the confusion,
Derek
