Hi, I came across your forum while trying to find information on this axe/hatchet I recently purchased at an Estate auction. First let me say that I know NOTHING about vintage/antique axes, so any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated. I purchased this axe (they called it a broad axe at the auction, but it is very light weight, a little over 2 lbs with handle) for next to nothing at a local auction to re-sell. However, I have researched and researched but can't seem to figure out what the mark says or stands for so I was hoping someone here could help me out. The first letter is either a C or U (leaning more towards C), then there is an A and a period then what looks like a D then another A. Under that, it looks like it could say LEVEL, but the first letter could also be a C. It is very hard to tell and it is driving me nuts trying to figure it out. The more I look at it, the more I think I see. There is also a definite 1. The axe measurements are 16 1/2" long including handle (the handle itself measures about 14" long) and the axe head itself measures about 6 1/2". If you need any information other than what I have posted, let me know and I will try my best to get it to you. Thanks to all in advance for your help.

I don't know diddly squat about these things either, BUT, one way you might bring that writing out a bit is to do a pencil rubbing. Lay a piece of paper of the writing and rub a pencil across it. You might be the letters better. Just a thought to help you with markings.
