A friend of mine asked me if I could get some information on a two knife set marked HYGRADE CUTLERY CO GERMANY on one side and SOLINGEN on the other side of an 8.25 inch "Bowie" style fixed blade knife with a small guard and carved stag handle. Handle has a nickle pommel with an imbedded brass (?) nut securing the tang. Pommel is polished and brass nut is flush. Second knife has fixed blade of 3 and 9/16s inches, similar construction, all markings on one side, and also has carved stag handle. The larger blade is highly polished, and my guess is made of a stainless steel. The smaller blade is not as polished and might be a carbon steel. Both knives are in very good shape.

These knives are part of the property of a small estate. Can anyone give me information/background on the maker, and any guesstimate of value.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like one of the old "jobbing" knives made in solingen for an american firm. The cutleries in germany have been jobbing since the late 1800's to date (except for small portions of time, during world war 1, and 2). Im not familar with that brand, but it reminds me of one the cheaper "off brands". Perhaps post 1950's? Its probably either carbon (european 1075 perhaps), steel, or the old cheaper, hard-to-sharpen, "stainless". It sounds like pre-420 steel.
