Information on wrought iron

Interesting. I was going to ask where you get iron, and what you ask for, but I guess if it isn't available I can only ask what are the best things to ask for as far as scrap sources.

How does one identify it? I found some stuff I am pretty sure is iron, large spikes, they seem to exfoliate like puff pastry, when they corrrode? Or is that comon of steel also? I heated some of this stuff up, but while it became read hot, it just disintegrated when I hit it.

Chain is one source I have heard of, though I haven't locate any yet.

cast iron can rust like that too depending on corosives in the environment, and could be that depending on how it disintegrated.

easiest way to tell is cut one of those spikes about 3/4 or 7/8 through, depending on thickness, put it into a vise, and break it, you're looking for a fibrous grain to sho, steel might stretch and break, cast iron will just break, wrought iron will stretch, and break like a rope.
