When I returned to Ft. Benning back in 1991 from the 1st Gulf War, I was given as a gift from a young lady friend, a handmade hunting/skinning knife marked R. Hinson & Son, Columbus GA. With this knife was included a brochure (since misplaced during my many moves), that stated that the bone handle was made out of something called "oosik" (sp?). I am pretty sure if that is the correct spelling, and I do recall that the material stated that the handle was made from a walrus penis bone and there was a brochure with the picture of a walrus that accompanied the knife. The knife itself is about 4 inches long and of an unknown apparently stainless steel, with brass on the handle near the front. Though an avid hunter, I have never used it to clean/dress a deer as it is just too nice of a knife and I preferred to keep it in new condition.

I would like to one day leave this knife to one of my sons, and have several questions about it.

The first question, is (1) Can anyone tell me anything about this knife or this knife maker? I found this information on The Knifemakers Guild site http://216.147.0.112/cgi-bin/members.pl?Voting), but the email attached is no longer any good and my email was returned. I will try calling the phone number next week.

(2) Does anyone know where I can get another of the brochures for the oosik handle bone that originally came with my knife 20 years ago that I may procure?

(3) What type steel was he using in making skinning knives back in 1991?,

(4) Can you tell me a little bit about this knife and R. Hinson knives in general, such as it's cost back in 1991 and possibly it's present value? This information would be greatly appreciated and passed down to whichever of my sons receives the knife.

Thank you.

I did a Google search, and it's HinsonGalleries.com. Email may work, that's a typo.

Good luck.

Greetings all. I saw this thread and decided to register and provide some help if it wasn't already found in regards to the oosik brochure. I am friends with the Hinson family and I know exactly of the brochure you are talking about. Bob made me a really nice Bowie knife to take to Iraq on my last tour.

Thanks - I was able to get into contact with them a few years ago and the person I spoke with via email (I think) sent me a copy of the brochure...I will have to find it as it was on my old computer. He also told me that the steel they were using back then was 440C IIRC.

You are correct Zombie X - He (they) made/make some nice knives.
