I am awaiting the arrival of a Spyderco Renegade, GIN 1, plain edge, G10, Golden manufacture, advertised to be "excellent".

I've found a little info on the net, years produced, etc. but am looking for owner observations, impressions, & reviews both positive & negative.

Were these well built and are any still in use? How does the GIN 1 stack up in usage compared to newer steels. Thanks, Ruff Cobb

Cant speak for the Renegade but GIN-1 was inbetween 440C & AUS-8 for me, I would say AUS-6 but it wasn't exactly like it.

All in all it is an adequate steel, not super edge retention but good enough for an EDC, similar to 440C but when sharpened I feel that the edge has more "bite".

Corrosion resistance was great but I only used it in western Europe and not as a boat knife so cant really say for usre. In a marine environment I would still use H1. ;)

Hope that helps.

Handles are unlined G-10. Keeps it nice an light, 3.6 oz for a knife with an almost 4" blade. Downside is that clip screws have been know to pull out. GIN-1 has been around quite was Spyderco's primary blade steel for about fifteen years, it's been eclipsed by a number of other steels, but is still an excellent one.
