Hi there,

During the 1980's I started to collect knives from the USA, but due to the economic sactions against South Africa it became very difficult to source knives from the USA and I stopped collecting knives in 1989.

Recently I started to buy knives again, but I was quite concerned about the bad "press" Gerber has been getting in respect of their products, why is this so?

What knife makes in the same price range as Gerber is worthwile in terms of quality and value for money?

Your advise is appreciated,

Thanks,

Matt

Hi mattpanex, For using knives the us made gerbers are still pretty good imo, like the gators and Lst series. Also buck makes knives along the same price but again I would stick with the US models.

Queen and Case make quality knives at good prices as well.

There are many knife companies who make quality blades. People can throw out names to you, like Kershaw, Spyderco, and Benchmade, but a lot depends on what designs you like and how much you are willing to spend. Do you want a folder or a fixed blade? How long of a blade do you want? What will you use the knife for?

Well, there are many reasons alot of us do not like Gerber knives: 1) Their quality has gone down hill. 2) Their blatant rip off of other companies designs.
I personally prefer Spyderco for production knives and Chris Reeve knives for higher end production knives.
