Afternoon all,

Sorry to sound ignorant and I am sure this has been asked before, but since there are no search capabilities....

Recently became interested in knife making and I have almost no idea where to start and I would think some reading material would be a good place. As with most subjects there is a plethora of material out there; some good others not. Any suggestions as to what books to begin with would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

Briggz, welcome to BFC, enjoy.
One book that I would recommend is, How To Make Knives, by Richard W. Barney, and Robert W.(Bob)Loveless. It is available from amazon.com, as well as many knifemakers supply houses.
It will give you information on various ways to make knives, and sheaths.
There are also many tutorials on the forums. I will list some.

Hope this helps.

Hi my name is Daqo'tah

First I got a book called HOW TO MAKE KNIVES. Its good, but the photos were not of very high quality in my copy.

Next for my birthday my wife got me the book , STEP-BY-STEP KNIFEMAKING...its real good, the photos are way clearer.

But the one thing that I got that truly inspired me to run out to my workshop is a video by Ed Fowler.

The video is his 52100 Bearing to Blade

it's a step by step demonstration of how to make a darn good knife.

I like to watch it each day as a good review before I march out and attempt that step on my own.

Wayne Goddard has a pair of excellent books out no aspiring knifemaker should be without. "The $50.00 Knife Shop" and "The Wonder of Knifemaking". Both can be found at bookstores like Barnes and Noble and Books-A-Million.
