When I first joined I mentioned that my father had left a nice Randall behind. He always said that it was originally purchased by someone famous. I am not even sure what model it actually is. The name on the knife is Steve Allen, but does not ring any bells for me. Anyway, I finally have a few pictures to share. It obviously was not being well cared for and will need a little attention to get it looking presentable. It does have a nice Randall sheath with a sharpening stone which also need some cleaning up.

So a couple questions: What Model is this and what is the best way to clean and preserve the now green hardware on the sheath. Thanks for your help.

There was a Steve Allen that was an entertainer years ago,I think his wife (also an entertainer) was Edie Gourmet.Does that ring a bell with anyone?

That Steve Allen was the original host of The Tonight Show in the 50s. He doesn't strike me as having been a "knife guy".

Edie Gourmet's husband was singer Steve Lawrence. Steve Allen was an early host of the tonight show. Common name though, a long shot to have been his. I believe it's a model 14.

Yup, looks like a 14. It doesn’t look poorly cared for to me, just some staining on the guard. It’s a stainless blade, so that’s probably helped.

I work with a Steve Allen... probably not the guy...

Edit: There should be a stamp on the back of the sheath with the model number. I’d polish the guard with some flitz on a rag, same with the sheath hardware. Renaissance wax would probably slow down any further corrosion.

Steve Lawrence is the guy in the sauna who gets the Blues Brothers the Palace ballroom gig at Lake Wazapamani.
I think your knife was made for "a" Steve Allen not THE Steve Allen...but who knows ..its interesting...maybe it was.

THE Steve Allen hosted the Tonight show from 1954 to 1957. He was married to Jayne Meadows. Probably my favorite late-night TV host until Letterman, and funniest Tonight Show host.

I had a Brush With Fame with Allen in 1966. He did not strike me as a Randall knife kind of guy, but I would not rule it out.

Thanks for the info. I did a search on the entertainer Steve Allen and now know who he was an I agree he did not seem to be an outdoorsman. One interesting thing is that he was married in Waterford CT at the home of her uncle. My Dad lived in CT all his life. I seriously doubt that there is any connection between the entertainer and the knife and more likely that my dad was pulling our legs. Once I get it all polished up I'll post a picture of it and the sheath.

Perhaps Randall could check their records to see if The Steve Allen ever ordered one of their knives?

I’ve heard that style Randall referred to as the Randall Attack. Nice knife. OH

It might have been a gift to the Steve Allen, or Steve Allen might have been a closet knife-fighter, or Steve Allen might have thought it was pretty, or OP's father might have thought it was funny to pretend it was the Steve Allen, even though he knew it was a Steve Allen...
It would be cool if Randall could look it up.

Wasn't Jack Paar the first host of the Tonight Show?

Nice knife!! Don't overclean it!! The original finish surfaces are important, if you care about retaining its value!!

Wether this Steve Allen is famous or not, you are a lucky man for getting that knife :)

........ It doesn’t look poorly cared for to me.......

It looked like it was stored in the sheath and the hilt & sheath snaps were very green. That is why I said poorly cared for originally. Hopefully the brass will clean up nice with some light polishing.

As for contacting Randall, I really don't see the need because I am hanging onto this not because of what name is on it, but because it was once my dads. I'll let the next guy figure out heritage.

Great knife, because it's from your dad, regardless of whose name is on it.
