Initial Impression of the Rubicon

Christmas done come early this year. Today, my buddy sent me a Rubicon and while it was on my list, I was totally shocked that he gifted one to me.

Anyway, so far, all I can say is wow. The fit and finish on this thing is incredible. The details are stunning. The carbon fiber is a true layered scale and is almost like a 3D holograph when rotated in the light. You can actually see the separate layers float over each other.

The G10 insert around the pivot actually fits flush in the carbon fiber and has its own pattern cut into even though you can't see it without damn good eyesight or a magnifier.

The TI pocket clip has a nice stonewash and is very stout. The great thing is while the carbon fiber scale is very slick, the pocket clip is tight and really grabs your pocket. Considering the price of the knife, it's a nice touch.

The blade is of course a flipper and literally flies out of the handle. The ball bearing washers really make the action very smooth but if you aren't a flipper, the Spyder hole allows for a more traditional opening method. The dual opening option is again a nice touch.

The steel is S30V and is a spear tip. The swedge really looks great and adds to the overall custom look and feel of this knife.

Drawbacks so far? I'm a lefty and the pocket clip is not reversible. Not a big deal for 90% of you. Kind of sucks for me though especially when there is no reason it could not have been tapped on both sides.

it is thicker than I prefer in an EDC knife. In jeans today, it carried fine but time will tell how I adapt to it. I prefer a thinner EDC and the Rubicon seems as if it could be made thinner. One positive is that it employees thick TI liners and swell of the carbon fiber really fills your hand.

After I carry it for a week or so, I'll update this post but just wanted to put some first thoughts out on this offering from Spyderco.

I just got one two days ago as an early Xmas gift as well. You summed things up nicely, I agree with everything you said. I am a little surprised at how sharp the G10 backspace is with its spikes, but they also help with grip. It's officially the nicest knife I own.

Thanks for posting a great picture Spyderco Dude, I was going to get to that at some point.

Sal.... Thanks for not using that damn smurf blue G10 on this knife like was used on the Techno! :p. The orange looks very nice against the carbon fiber.

The colors are chosen by the person who collaborates with the model, Slysz - Techno and Bowie, Peter Carey does the Rubicon and Firefly(Both are CF/Orange).

I've had mine since they started shipping, and I still feel like the knife is a fantastic show piece. It looks and feels better than some customs I've bought, and while it's too bulky for me to carry it often, I love it for being different and gorgeous.

It's hard to show just how shiny the polished CF is in pictures:
