I received a unique 15 inch Banspati today that is quite different than the usual Banspati.
Blade - a bit bigger than that of a Sirupati of comparable size, but smaller than an Ang Khola. No flaws noted on the blade and the edge is perfectly straight. Grind on both sides is equal to my eyes. As for performance, I suspect this blade will do well. Made by Bura, whose crescent moon graces the blade, this is an excellent blade. On the HI scale I rate the blade 10 out of 10.
Scabbard - Very good work on this also. Minor flaws are a sharp brass tip and some small cosmetic flaws on the brass. Has HI superfrog. Would rate this 9 out of 10.
Karda and Chakma - smaller than the usual size karda and chakma that HI users see these days, but are still functional. Would rate them 10 out of 10.
Feel - The khukuri feels very nicely balanced in my hand and the handle feels very comfortable for a brass handle.
Overall, I would rate this khukuri 9.5 out of 10, but eventually expect it to be a 20 out of 10...read on....
The surprise: The brass handles on the khukuri, karda and chakma are not engraved, just plain brass. Apparently Bura felt that this khukuri was a bit on the small side to do some engraving. Consequently, I received it at a reduced price. On the upside, I plan to find a good metalworker who is up to the challenge of engraving this khukuri, karda and chakma as well as adding some semi-precious gems in the right places. The scabbard will also get the treatment so that I have my own unique kothimoda Banspati. Who knows...I may just do the job myself!
