Hey Folks,
I posted a couple of weeks ago that I was waiting to recieve a new knife from Stomper. It was great working with John to have this knife made, this is the first custom that I've ordered and the process couldn't have been smoother.
Those of you who have ordered knives from Stomper know what I'm talking about. This guy doesn't know the meaning of the word no! He was able to honor any request that I had, answered all of my questions in a timely manner (almost always on the same day!), and just overall seems like one hell of nice guy!
This knife was designed by C Bryant during Johns "Anniversary Knife" contest last year. Initially John made a numbered run of these knives. The basic design had a 4.5" blade with a 4.75" handle and is what you see here. Its ground from 1/8" O1 and has Stomper's convex grind with a small secondary bevel. The only thing I requested different than that was to have the edge ground all the way to the handle (no ricasso) and for some light contouring on the handle. John really nailed the contouring on this one, it's hand filling without seeming fat (I wear large size gloves). I requested one of Johns pouch type sheaths with a belt loop angled for cross draw on my left side.
I've attached a few pics of the knife and the in hand grips. One thing that I really like about this design is that the handle is long enough and the blade has enough forward mass that you can grip the handle be the rear and it chops really well for a 4.5" blade. But its proportioned in such a way that it doesn't feel or look like a big knife. It really seems to be a great all-around knife!
The sheath that John made is sturdy to say the least! Its thick, heavy leather and seems just as rugged as the knife. It retains the knife well. Its not a "kydex like" leather sheath, but it definately has more positive retention than other pouch sheathes I've had. So far I really like the cross draw sheath, it carries like a dream!
I've used this knife so far to do some fire prep, some light chopping, and I diced some potatoes last night for dinner. So far the edge held up great, but I'll do more of a user review after I get some mileage on the blade.
Later,
Brandon
