well, i just got my powerlock today and despite the fact it didn't have the scissor and 1/4 drive (read my other post about that) I wanted to write about my first impressions on the tool (after all first impressions are the most important right)

Right off the bat I knew the tool was going to be great even before i opened the box and took it out. the tool came in a us priority mail box like basically all the other knives i get but it was so HEAVY compared to the ones with knives inside them! at that very moment i already knew i had a quality tool, call me old fashioned but a light tool is a cheap tool, i hand my tools to have some heft to it. anyways i proceeded to check out the tool. First of all mines came with a leather sheath and it's very nice, the tool itself is great, i clamped the pliers onto a pipe and swung it around and the grip was good, the knife however was dull as a piece of wood, i proceeded to sharpen it on my sharpmaker and it was apparent trying to get it at 40 degrees was futile so i just sharpened it the best i could and now it cuts pretty good, same story with the weird sheepsfoot serrated blade it came with i even cut myself with it after i sharpened it! anyways the the phillips screwdriver is very nice it's not a crappy half driver like on the cheap tools, the biggest gripe i have about the tool are the fold out covers. i find them to be just a bad design feature, no offense to any one at sog, maybe some people like it, but basically it's a nuisance to open and close all the time and if i take them off it hurts my hand when im griping the tool hard, i think it would have been better if the handle edges were enlarged a bit and rounded like the leathermans, but all in all great too and kudos to SOG!

yes it is, is that a bad thing? and yes i got it off of ebay for 25 bucks shipped. is that a bad thing?

25 bucks shipped????
Damn, thats a good deal. Is there any left???
If I ever get a multi-tool, the powerlock would be it.
I consider getting the TiNi Powerlock for awhile.

It's very hard to pass up a good deal.

Regarding "good deals" though, at some point, a deal is truly "too good to be true." That is the case here. At $25 shipped, I can say with complete certainty that there is nothing honest about this deal. That price is far, far, far below any wholesale price that SOG has for that tool ... period! These tools likely "fell off the back of a military supply truck" (if you know what I mean).

Manji (and others), I have nothing against you personally, so don't think I'm chewing you out here. I likely would have jumped all over the chance to get a tool at a price like that as well.

well at first i thought this guy got his stuff from some estate sale by from what you told me in the other post i figured it was from a military surplus, but i assumed that it was legal so to speak... I never thought that it could be dishonest. As a consumer my first concern is to find a good deal and especially with a medium such as ebay it is very hard for me to discern "how" the seller came about with the items...

I’m not sure about prices but about 30% of MSRP seems completely unbelievably for me.
Damn, why we do not have such prices in Europe!

Returning to the tool – agree about the knife blade, it certainly not the sharpest blade I have ever had. However I think it is not any good idea to sharpen it using Sharpmaker (at least in V-mode) because it has single sided sharpening. I have rebeveled mine to conventional both sided sharpening additionally deepening serrations and now it cuts pretty decently as to its size and steel.

As to covers – they are designed exactly to make the grip safer and more comfortable. The opposite side is that they make folding tool access somewhat messy but something costs something, as always at least.

And how do you like pliers? I have some multi-tools for comparison (for ex. Leatherman Super Tool 200, Gerber 600 Series and some more) and I like SOG pliers the best. The force multiplying transmission works very decently, I can cut 4-millimeters thick nail with one hand with SOG PowerLock but I can’t do the same with any other, traditionally made pliers.

Let me just give some prices to give a little perspective.

The Black PowerLock Prices:

MSRP: $84.95
Typical Store: $79.00
Average Low On-line: $60-70.00
Absolute Lowest I've seen: $55.00

At some point, there is no profit being made by the seller ... unless in a case like this ... :(

Looks like we got the same deal on eBay, too bad its a shady character. I recieved my powerlock on Friday and I luv it. I am going to be ordering the missing peices for it soon, but it has already proved itself usefull in the few daws I have had it. I am bequething my old PowerPlier to my freind Trenton in Colorado and it looks like it will be goin back into the fence building job it did so well at previously. Now I will have supplied my 2 best buddies with hand-me down SOGs...gotta look after yer friends you know.

I get many ooo's and ahhh's from my new PowerLock. And already I have performed numerous 25 cent deomonstrations. A 25 cent demonstration of a SOG multi-tool consists of the curious party giving me a quarter and after a few squeezes of the heavy wire cutters me handing back thier quarter in many shiney shards....it is my answer to that question "whats the difference between this thing and a leatherman?"

You guys can easily redeem yourselves by performing at least 15 of TheSkinwalkeR's 25 cent demonstrations! :D :D
