I know that there have been a bazillion threads on sharpening and stones, but I just wanted to submit my latest purchase. I have been using a Lansky Rod System for about 2 months. I have not been very pleased with it as it is not well suited for small blades (like on a stockman pocketknife).

So, I did my due diligence on this great site and finally settled on the following as my baseline tools:
  • DMT D6 Coarse Dia-Sharp (6 x 2 - 320 grit)
  • Spyderco C302M Medium Stone (8 x 2 - 600 grit)
  • Spyderco C302F Fine Stone (8 x 2 - 1200 grit)
I went with the DMT for the coarse work and the Spydercos for the finishing work. Hopefully this will meet most of my needs for quite a while (except that I still need a good strop). I couldn't see any reason to get the Spyderco Ultra-fine stone as the Fine has a 1200 grit, which should be plenty good enough for my EDCs and kitchen knives.

Just our of curiosity, how much finer should I go? Is a 1200 ceramic fine enough?
