First, I'd like to thank Ms. Yangdu for putting up with my whining and pestering to sell me a Tarwar. I posted a sword query a few days ago, found some nice responses by the folks here (thanks!), and figured I wanted a tarwar. I emailed Ms. Yangdu, and she let me know one was going to be a DOTD and that I should keep an eye out. I wasn't fast enough, and missed out. Luckily, she had another one and asked if I wanted it.

I sure did!

Specs (in western terms)

Villager fit and finish with horn handle.
OAL: 29 1/4"

blade: 20 3/4" from guard to blade tip
1 1/2 right after the guard and widens to 1 5/8" wide
Thickness is 1/4" at the ricasso, thickens to 5/16" at the point of balance, and then drops down to 1/4" @ 9" above the ricasso. It stays 1/4" until it narrows down near the tip.

handle: 8 3/8" from guard to pommel, full tang.
3 5/8" circumference for 1 1/8" in what I believe is steel below the guard. Horn replaces steel after that, and has swells, largest @ 4 1/2" circumference @, coincidentally, 4 1/2" below the guard. The bottom of the handle sweels into the pommel, which is 2 1/2" x 1 /8"

guard: 3 1/3" x 2"
Point of balance: 4" from guard
1 1/2" ricasso immediately after guard

From the DOTD pics, I knew I had to have it, and I have to say, I am really impressed with the blade. Solid feel. I was afraid my medium sized hands would be a tad too small for the handle, but it feels perfect. Point of balance makes it feel like a good cutter and chopper. While nicely balanced, the weight prevents it from being very lively.

I plan to use this to clear a friend's backyard, fully understanding it is only warrantied for "general use". I'll try to give a more detailed review once I've handled the tarwar some.

More pics to come.

Excellent info.; and

very much appreciated by this bloke cursed with smallish hands. :o :(

Your measurements rule this model out for me but I would like someone with an older style Tarwar if they could comment regarding your description of its dynamics as it would be easier to alter the grip on one of these to suit me.

Glad to hear that Yangdu had another Tarwar and it seems it was just for you..it's a super sword as you described...good job...see you around....

Great pix and post, thank you

These are sweet, aren't they? Congratulations :cool:

I really dig the look and the feel, it's AWESOME. And thanks!

How small are your hands? I wear medium gloves and they fit like a glove.

Yes, I was very fortunate. I have read that the blades call you and choose you, rather than the other way around, and I felt this one calling when I saw it.

I don't think there's many people that hang around the HI forum for long without hearing the siren call of the Tarwar.

I really don't like most swords out there (probably because most swords I see aren't really made for actual combat, they are wall hangers in the modern world. What attracted me to the Tarwar is the simplicity of the design. Other than the dragon engraved on mine, there's no "fantasy sword" stuff on it. If I somehow got transported back in time to the medieval ages by the Necronomicon (like in Army of Darkness) and had to fight with swords, I wouldn't be afraid to bring the Tarwar with me.

Glad you got one that you wanted Qeth and that you're happy with it. As the Cpl points out, the HI swords are workers not wall hangers. I look forward to your input after clearing out that yard. Have a good time.

Sweet! It's always smart to ask if Yandgu has another if you miss one, so good going!

I noted that exact DOTD myself and wish I had been able to do the deal.

Hope to see more pics as you break it in.

Norm

I added more pics.

I was hoping to take it out for some dirt time this weekend, but the weather isn't cooperating. Rains and possible thunderstorms this weekend. I'd rather not be holding a large chunk of steel in the middle of all the lightning :P

I'll get more pics of the handle, tang, and ricasso.

Thanks for the photos Qeth. As for taking it out and working it, go ahead and play it safe. We can wait for your next installment.
