Yep folks, it does really happen (in the last few days)...

Seems good prep (beacon/spray) and smart decision making saved this dude...

I do note the lack of details of the hiker making a fire with a bow-drill and lashing his S super V steeled custom fixed blade to a pole with his boot laces to fend of the charging Kodiaks...alas, it seems it was just the beacon and a measly old can o' bear spray that saved him...how boring:yawn:!!!

On a serious note, glad the dude's OK. It would seem that he was alone:confused::rolleyes:, but the beacon saved his bacon. Good lesson(s) here.

Thought I'd pass it along, hope some more details emerge.

Boss1. Tried to message you about the trade we talked about a couple days ago. Your PM's are full and I couldn't get a hold of you.

On to the story. Beacon and pepper spray. Seems a miltary man woudl have enough sense to pack a gun in bear country, especially alone. Probably did have one and did not reveal it.

Of course , bacon spray ! You hold the bacon in one hand and spray the bear with the other !!!

To be serious ___ There has been a fatal polar bear attack on Svalbard Norway. British students were attacked , one fatality. Yes they had a rifle but the teacher DIDN'KNOW HOW TO USE IT AND COULDN'T FIRE IT !! Finally another teacher ,knowing how to use it , killed the bear. The bear had a bad tooth problem and was malnouriched.

Have equipment ? Know how to use it !

Here's a problem of a resident in bear country who was wearing earphones and NO bear spray !!

He could have had bear steaks. Lost opportunity. Joe Teti would be disappointed.

can i hijack this thread and ask for recommendations on an emergency beacon? I've never shopped for it before so I don't know what to look for.

Haha who knows, we are descendants of bad asses after all.

We used to carry a little air horn in with with us for black bears on hunts. Bear spray works, just know how to use it. Only time I ever packed a gun for bears was when I was working in Alaska.
