Inlays -- how?

Possibly a dumb question, but how do makers get the the shields inlaid so well into the handles?

So far, the GECs and Northfields I've owned have essentially perfect fit, regardless whether the shield is set into bone, micarta, wood, acrylic or antler.

I can't imagine they're hand-fit, or that CNC/lasers are used -- both seem too expensive and/or time-consuming.
 
Somewhere on this forum theres a thread with a short video of Stan Shaw( I think) doing an inlet with an old wooden pump drill.
I also remember a thread with either Tony Bose or Kerry showing the steps to inletting shields.
