Was just wondering what all blades you grabbed for your typical hiking days. I've been recently getting into hiking and trailing extensively. I've been carrying my Ontario 18" Machete for brush clearing and larger working of wood, and my Mora Robust for finer tasks. If its a smaller, more local trail to me (I live in the city, but we have some nice, semi worked out trails) I'll only carry my ESEE 5. A Griptilian always has home in my pocket. For longer expeditions, camping, or going into a totally unknown area, I'll also carry a Wetterlings Hatchet in my pack, y'know, just in case. I'm slowly building my gear into bigger and better, and will hopefully have a Condor machete or two to pack instead, albeit my Ontario has yet to fail me in the 3 years I've had it (Best $15 I've ever spent!)

Always have a pocket knife or multi tool. I rotate them but lately it's been a Swisstool or SAK. Fixed blade is a JK custom or a puukko.

The Kephart trio is generally all that is needed. Add a good folding saw and you have a great assortment of tools.

Small Forest Axe
Vic Farmer
Fixed blade knife
Folding Saw or bucksaw

It all depends on what I'm doing.

A Victorinox is somewhere with me, which could be the Classic in the first-aid kit, a Farmer for the saw, or a Fieldmaster for the saw and scissors.
A Spyderco folder will be in my pocket - Pacific, Endura, Delica, or Native.
A small/medium fixed blade will be on my belt.

Other blades for more specific purposes might be added to the others or replace one of the above depending on what I'm doing.

I like a machete (or machete-like big knife) for clearing paths through briars or cane.
I like a Silky saw for wood stoves or tree trimming. I can leave the Farmer or Fieldmaster out if I have a Silky.
I like a bigger knife on my belt when bowhunting along with a small fixed blade in the pack.
I like a serrated Spyderco H1 hawkbill of some size when fishing, or a Victorinox Classic. If in a boat/canoe/kayak, it's the bigger one.

I really do try to be practical and not carry too much. It helps me enjoy going farther and staying longer.

Edited to add a few photos.

Definitely! My new rig will consist of my BM-154BK, my Mora Robust pro and my griptilian. I will also have my Ontario in my pack for larger brush clearing.

This is one of those things that will constantly evolve and change. Well, as long as we love the out doors and have time to get outside. Panzer has a good idea with the trio. Me personally I'd love to bring a bunch of stuff with me but I rarely need or use much of it. Obviously a good fixed blade, I prefer a traditional pattern: nessmuck, kephart or puukko. An axe is always fun but a folding saw works better for me.

I weight was no issue I think mine would look something like this for a anything longer than a day hike:

Small hatchet or hawk
4.5" blade fixed
Folding or Sven saw

I tend to go lighter. I also hike mostly on established trails, so I'm not doing any clearing. I have a leatherman in the pack. A midsized folder in my pocket. And then usually a smaller fixed blade. A mora, bk 14, or esee izula. This is for short day hikes. I don't really do any overnighting. And if camping then the car is nearby. I will usually have a hatchet and a midsized knife, bk 16 or gso 4.1 when camping.

For hikes I like to take larger blades because I do enjoy traversing the path less traveled. I assume my bk154 and griptilian will more than suffice. This will be for mid to long hikes. Short hikes I will take my mora robust or esee 3 and my griptilian only. I do plan to carry a pack with a larger blade at all times for "just in case" along with some gloves, medical kit and paracord. A multi-tool is always in my pocket
