To those who have the X-1, what are your opinions? How would you rate it for an EDC, personal light?

I had a green x1 but I gave it away. If you want a lot of throw in a small package, then the x1 is good. However, it has zero side spill and the spot of light is pretty small. Good things about it are: good throw, AA batteries, 10 hours run time, small. The one bad thing is the lack of side spill. For a general EDC light, I think the infinity ultra is a better choice (cheaper too). It runs on AAs as well and has a runtime of 25 hours at peak brightness IIRC.

Yes, I would not get another X1 for EDC for that reason. It has an excellent beam, but it is difficult to use up close because it is so focused. I found myself having to hold the light very far from things to get any sort of real light spillage.

Other than that, it's a great light. I don't know how realistic this is, but if you're not going to be using it up close it should be perfect :D

I had gotten one when they first came out, and gave it to my daughter when she was working inside the computer. The tight, bright beam was ideal, lighting up just what she needed to see, without glaring off everything else.

I missed it, so I got myself two more. I usually carry a Surefire E2 or an Inova X5T when I go walking at night. Bringing the X1 along, I found that in a dark area, it could illuminate the top of a tree across the street. It works real well at lighting up just the sidewalk in front of me without spilling over into the nearby yards or oncoming drivers' eyes.

I like mine for many of the reasons Esav does. I particularly like the fact that it has the relatively cheap and easily obtainable AAA batteries.

If I get home late at night it throws enough light for me to avoid the usual death traps around the house like bits of wood, hoses, whatever the wife has left there, whatever the dogs have dragged home, poisonous snakes, etc.

It' s tight beam may be desireable for those who do not want to be "spotted" while using a light. I' m told by a LEO friend that it works quite well in confined areas such as in an auto where a light is required. But because of the X-1s virtual no spill, there is no illumination of the autos insides.

Thanks guys. I want it for up close work and additional throw. Sounds like it should be near perfect. :cool:

AA. That's another reason I gave it to my daughter. She would not keep up with lithium 123s :)

The X-1 is perfect for close-up work where you want throw, but not necessarily side-spill. I use mine for looking...

(1) under my desk for my mid-morning snack that just rolled underneath;
(2) under my car seats for loose change;
(3) under my desk at my computer cabling;
(4) behind my computer tower;
(5) under my bed for the cat, etc.

I can only echo what has already been posted. The X1 has great throw, uses AA batteries, and is bright for its size. The light has zero sidespill and is like looking at a room through a hole in a piece of paper.

I also own the Infinity Ultra-G and like it a little better. The Ultra-G is available at CountyCom

the www.countycomm.com version of the Infinity Ultra is particularly nice because it is super hard anodized, type 3 anodization, compared to Gerber (who bought CMG) regular version which is the cheapie anodization.

This is a great light. Surprising throw for its size. If you want something even smaller with comparable (or better) throw, there is Streamlight's Keymate which resembles a tiny flashlight but fits on a keychain. An amazing light for its size.

A little bigger, try Streamlight Luxeon Jr. It runs on 2 AAs, for about 2 hours, is only slightly bigger than a standard penlight but very bright, with good spill and good throw. It is a staggeringly good light for its size. I am going to run mine on rechargable NiMH AA batteries when the alkalines (it came with) run down.
